TED Talk Video: Bill Gates

You are going to watch a video of a lecture by Bill Gates. Before you watch, look at the pictures
below and try to guess what the video might be about.

I think the video will talk about environmental problems, and Bill Gates explain a possible
future, if everyone continues to be unconscious about the world crisis. Then Bill Gates is going
to propose a different way to create energy and could be the solution to one of the most
important environmental problems, however i think he just propose the idea but he hasn’t
started the project.

Now read the description below.

At TED2010, Bill Gates presents his vision for the world's energy future, describing the need for
"miracles" to avoid planetary catastrophe and explaining why he’s supports a very different type
of nuclear reactor. The necessary goal? Zero carbon emissions globally by 2050.

1. What accent does Bill Gates have? Is it easy to understand? Why?

The accent of Bill Gates is from American, or I think so or i think so, because british accent is
different, I don't know how explain the differences but when you listen a british people you
feel the different pronunciation

2. What are the four factors which Bill Gates describes that cause carbon dioxide (CO2)
emissions in the world?

He explains four factor, he show this factors in a multiplication, first factor is people. this people
need some services to live secondly this service need energy to work and obviously when use
energy to work produce CO2

Now watch 7.08-11.41 of the video and answer question 3.

3. What are the five energy sources that Gates says can help to reduce CO2 emissions?
Why problems does he identify about each of them?

The first energy sources is carbon capture and storage, but this method now is so
difficult to do, the second energy sources is nuclear, however this energy have three
problems, isn’t safety for people work in the place or work with this energy, moreover
this energy can will used to do weapons. The thirds are solar thermals, solar
photovoltaic and wind, at present this energy sources are so low to compare with the
daily energy consumption.

Now watch 11.41-15.03 of the video and answer question 4.

4. What do you think Terrapower is? Use the description that Bill Gates gives and do some
research on the internet on your phones to try and summarise what Terrapower is.
Write a short description below.
 It’s a way to use nuclear energy, but the method to use that at the moment no is safe to
do, and Terrapower work with this energy with the purpose of change the world.

- if each one makes a small change in a habit with which it is affecting the environment it is
possible that this crisis is treated and solved
