1. PROBLEM STATEMENT

The shaft shown in figure is driven by a gear at the keyway, drives a fan at the left keyway, and is
supported by two deep groove ball bearings. The shaft is made from AISI 1020 CD steel. At steady
state speed, the gear transmits a radial load of 1121.5kN and a tangential load of 3021.5kN and a
pitch diameter of 200mm. Use ANSYS software to analyze the shaft for stress concentration,
deflections and critical locations.

2. METHODOLODY
Modelling of the geometry, meshing, applying constraints on the shaft as well as other factors
were applied to get the required results.

2.1 MODELLING

The 3D model is first generated in Solidworks and then imported to ANSYS. The geometry as
rendered in Spaceclaim of the figure as rendered in Ansys is shown below.
Fig.2. Geometry Model

2.1 MATERIALS

The shaft is made of AISI 1020 steel. The mechanical properties of AISI 1020 CD steel is tabulated
below:

Material Tensile Yield Elongation % Reduction % Brinell

Strength MPa Strength Hardness
MPa
AISI 1020 470 390 15 40 131
CD

2.2 MESHING
Meshing is done using Triangular Mesh and and element size of 0.05m was used for greater
accuracy.

2.3 LOADS AND BOUNDARY CONDITIONS

A radial load of 6.6kN and a tangential load of 8.5kN were applied at the keyway of gear,
and a moment of 1700Nm was applied on the shaft in anticlockwise x-direction.

3. RESULTS
Results for Equivalent stress and deformation were obtained. The figures below show maximum
and minimum corresponding values of stress as well deformation.

4. CONCLUSIONS

The stresses are mainly concentrated around the bearing seats with the highest Von Mises
stress being 5.19E8 Pa at the bearing seat to the left end and the maximum deformation is
present around the gear keyway, the deformation being 8.17e-5 m at the keyway.
