BIZ WHIZ

Rationale:
Biz whiz is a competition that enables students to test their knowledge and wisdom and
gain new concepts and ideas. This promotes friendly competition. The participants will be able to
taste sweet victory if he pulls through but if he loses he will able to pinpoint the things that he/she
is still lacking in and this will encourage him/her to learn more.

Guidelines and Mechanics:


1. Each competing organization shall provide 1 participating team. The participating team
shall be composed of 3 members who are bona fide students of Saint Paul School of
Professional Studies and must be a duly registered members of the competing organization
he/she is representing.

1. Participants shall wear the official shirt representing their respective organization during
the contest proper.

2. All participants must be at the venue 15 minutes prior to the event for verification. If the
contestants are not at the venue after the last call, the officer in-charge will declare a default.

3. Quiz coverage is General Information. There will be 15 questions in each round. The
participants shall answer the questions on the tag board, which will be provided by the
facilitators, after the cue is given. Each round is given a time limit to answer the questions,
differing in the level of difficulty with the corresponding point(s), as such:

 Easy 5 seconds 1 point/ correct answer


 Moderate 10 seconds 3 points/ correct answer
 Difficult 15 seconds 5 points/ correct answer

4. Determination of winners shall be based on the biggest accumulated points from all rounds
set forth by the body. The winners shall be confirmed by the organizing committee.

5. Winners shall be announced after the tabulation of points.

6. If the participants are to have the same score, a clincher round is to be given.

SLAM POETRY

Rationale:
Slam poetry is a re-invented traditional poetic form inspired from the centuries old
Balagtasan in Luzon through other place in the Philippines such as Ismayling, a poetic form
popular in Calbayog City. It is a poetic joust that commonly tackles dramatic issues or love
concerns. It has been popularized recently by banking on the popularity of the “Hugot” concept.
Slam poetry promotes creativity of every individual and an avenue for them to express their
feeling, thoughts and emotions.

Guidelines and Mechanics:


1. Each competing organization shall provide 1 participant who is duly registered and bona
fide member of the competing organization they are representing and of Saint Paul School
of Professional Studies.

2. Participants shall wear the official shirt representing their respective organization during
the contest proper.

3. All participants must be at the venue 15 minutes prior to the event for verification. If the
contestants are not at the venue after the last call, the officer in-charge will declare a default.

4. The contestants must deliver a memorized free-verse or poem tackling about experiences,
love issues, feelings or any dramatic and emotional issues. It can be in English, Filipino
or Waray language.

5. Participants are allowed to use musical instruments or background music during their
performance.

6. The participants must deliver the piece with a minimum of 3 minutes and a maximum time
of 7 minutes. There shall be a deduction of 1 point per second or a fraction thereof in such
cases that the contestants do not meet the minimum time requirement or go over the
prescribed maximum time allotment.

7. Using foul and ghastly words are extremely prohibited during the competition.

8. The piece must be of the participant’s own composition and submitted to the Academics
Committee several days before the competition day, a specific date set upon by the
committee for evaluation.
9. The piece must be printed in a short bond paper when passed following the format given:

ESSAY WRITING CONTEST

Rationale:
Writing is a medium through which students can convey their ideologies, insights and
understanding of things around them in which in turn will develop proficiency in written language
as it is one of the macro-skills that comprise communicative competence that must be mastered by
an effective communicator.

Guidelines and Mechanics:

2. Each competing organization shall provide 1 participant who is a bona fide student of Saint
Paul School of Professional Studies and must be a duly registered member of the competing
organization he/she is representing.

3. Each participant shall wear the official shirt representing his/her respective organization
during the contest proper.

4. All participants must be at the venue 15 minutes prior to the event for verification. If the
participants are not at the venue after the last call, the officer in-charge will declare a
default.

5. The official font style is Times New Roman, font size is “12”, and line spacing is “1.5”.

6. The participants are not allowed to bring any related electronic devices such as flash drives,
cellphones, etc. The computer/laptop to be used will be provided by the competing
groups.
7. A 10-minute set-up preparation and a maximum time of 1 hour and 30 minutes will be
given to the participants to finish their work on a given topic/issue/theme.

8. Topic/issue/theme of the contests will be given 5 minutes before the contest proper.

9. English language shall be used as the “absolute medium” of communication. If any non-
English words are going to be used, one (1) point deduction to the total points garnered by
the said participant is to be given.

10. Participants are not allowed to use a laptop that have a Wi-Fi connection or use any gadgets
aside from the laptop/computer that was provided by each competing group. If a participant
will be found out to be violating this or any of the rules, he/she will automatically be
disqualified.

POSTER-MAKING CONTEST

Rationale:
Poster-making contest is an effective avenue for students to develop their skills in arts. This
lets them express, interpret and channel their opinions and various perspectives on matters that
concern not only the academic community but the rest of the society through an artistic medium.

Guidelines and Mechanics:


1. Each competing organization shall provide 1 participating team. The participating team
shall be composed of 3 members who are bona fide students of Saint Paul School of
Professional Studies and must be a duly registered members of the competing organization
he/she is representing.

2. Participants shall wear the official shirt representing their respective organization during
the contest proper.

3. All participants must be at the venue 15 minutes prior to the event for verification. If the
contestants are not at the venue after the last call, the officer in-charge will declare a default.

4. No member of MASKI organization or any art-related group of the school shall be allowed
to participate.

5. Participants must provide their own art materials e.g. pencils, erasers, crayons, pastels and
other media that suit the participants’ style and preference to be submitted a day before the
competition proper. Card boards to be used will be provided by the competing teams
(1/8 Illustration board). No participants are allowed to borrow from other contestants of
other competing organizations during the contest proper. Digital Art is STRICTLY not
allowed.

6. A 10 minute set-up preparation and a maximum time of 2 hours will be given to the
participants to finish their work on a given topic/issue/theme.

7. Topic/issue/theme of the contest will be given 5 minutes before the contest proper.

8. Participants will be judged based on the following criteria:

SABAYANG PAGBIGKAS

Rationale:
Sabayang Pagbigkas is a group competition that showcases both talents and skills of the
students in terms of delivery. It enhances one’s creativity and promotes unity in the group.
Sabayang pagbigkas allows its members to generate a healthy discussion of ideas in ways of
presenting their respective piece.

Guidelines and Mechanics:


1. Each competing organization shall provide 1 participating team which is composed of a
minimum of 15 members and a maximum of 25 members who are bona fide students of
Saint Paul School of Professional Studies and must be a duly registered members of the
competing organization he/she is representing.

2. All participants must be at the venue 15 minutes prior to the event for verification. If the
contestants are not at the venue after the last call, the officer in-charge will declare a default.

3. The participating teams shall provide their own piece, it may be an original or from any
source, that is related to the theme of the 24th founding anniversary which should be
submitted to the Academic Committee on August 13, 2018, Monday, from 8:00 am to 3:00
pm.

4. The group must deliver a choreograph or dramatized verse choir presentation.

5. Participants are to provide their own costumes and props for their performance.

6. A minimum of 3 minutes and a maximum time of 7 minutes is given for the entire
presentation including the entrance and exit. There shall be a deduction of 1 point per
second or a fraction thereof in such cases that the contestants do not meet the minimum
time requirement or go over the prescribed maximum time allotment.

7. Participants will be judged based on the following criteria:

SPELLING BEE

Rationale:
A spelling bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of
words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. It is an avenue for individuals to showcase their
knowledge regarding vocabulary and memory. It allows the contestants to learn new concepts and
words in the competition.

Guidelines and Mechanics:


1. Each competing organization shall provide 1 participant who are bona fide students of Saint
Paul School of Professional Studies and must be a duly registered members of the
competing organization he/she is representing.

2. Each participant shall wear the official shirt representing his/her respective organization
during the contest proper.

3. All participants must be at the venue 15 minutes prior to the event for verification. If the
contestants are not at the venue after the last call, the officer in-charge will declare a default.

4. There will be 15 words in each round. The participants will write down their answers on
the tag board, which will be provided by the facilitators, after the cue is given. Each round
is given a time limit to spell the words, differing in the level of difficulty with the
corresponding point(s), as such:

DEBATE CUP

Rationale:

The Debate Cup’s goal is to test the critical thinking and logic of its competitors. The
essence of team communication and the awareness of socio-civic and geopolitical issues present
in modern day society are being cultivated in the minds of the competitors and the audience.
Ultimately, this will encourage everyone to be more participative when it comes to issues that will
affect our way of life.

Guidelines and Mechanics:

1. Each competing organization shall provide 2 teams composed of 3 members each who are
duly registered and bona fide members of the competing organization they are representing
and of Saint Paul School of Professional Studies.

2. Participants shall wear the official shirt representing their respective organization during
the contest proper.

3. All participants must be at the venue 15 minutes prior to the event for verification. If the
contestants are not at the venue after the last call, the officer in-charge will declare a default.

4. No member of Saint Paul Debate Society shall be allowed to participate.

5. The motion will be given before the start of every round thereafter, the participating teams
will be given 20 minutes to prepare.

6. There will be 3 rounds in this competition:

 Round 1: “Preliminary Elimination Round”, wherein 8 groups will battle against each
other. The match-ups of teams debating in the round will be assigned based on the
general drawing of lots. The participating teams will be ranked according to their
scores. The top 4 groups would proceed to the semi-final round.

 Round 2: “Semi-final Elimination Round”, wherein the 4 groups would battle against
each other. The 2 winning groups shall proceed to the Final Debate Cup.

 Round 3: “Final Cup”, the 2 remaining groups will battle for the last time. The winner
of this round will be the Intramurals’ Debate Cup Champion 2019.

7. Only the English language will be used the medium of communication.

8. The debate will be done using the Modified Asian Parliamentary format wherein the timing
of the following must be observed:

a. Constructive Speech – each speaker is given a maximum of 7 minutes.


b. Points of information - can be raised after the first minute of the speakers’ speech
but will not be allowed after the sixth minute.
c. Reply Speech - either the Prime Minister/Deputy Prime Minister and the Leader of
Opposition/Deputy Leader of the Opposition shall both deliver a 4-minute reply
speech.

9. For the 3 rounds, the government and opposition will be decided on the debating match.

10. Other instructions will be given during the contest proper.

EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING

1. Participants must be bona fide students of SPSPS and duly registered


members of the competing organization. Participants must present their
registration receipt (original or photocopy of the receipt will do) to secure that
they are registered.
2. Each competing year level must have two (2) representatives only.
3. During the contest proper, a contestant will be given a maximum of 5 minutes
to prepare and 5 minutes to deliver her/his speech. (The first contestant will
be given 5 minutes to organize his thoughts, when the 5 minutes has elapsed
he/she will start to deliver her/his speech at the same time the next contestant
will be given the topic to prepare for 5 minutes and so on.)
4. Only the English language will be used as a medium.
5. The sound system will automatically shut off when the contestant exceeds the
allotted time.
6. Drawing of lots will be done for the order of presentation before the contest
starts.
7. All contestants must be present at the venue 30 minutes before the scheduled
time of the contest. Late contestants will STRICTLY not be entertained.
