local boys and girls
program sent four members to
participate in a salsa competition
at Georgia Tech’s Student
Success Center July 17.
The Salsa, Salsa competition
featured young chefs from
approximately 20 boys and
girls clubs from across the state,
including the Samuel L. Jones
Boys and Girls Club in Decatur,
to see who could make the best
salsa.
The competition was created
to show children alternative
and healthy ways of eating,
according to a Boys and Girls
Club spokesperson. According
to the Boys and Girls Club of Michaela Olufeso, Rubie Taylor, Autumn Lockwood and Aaron Siller participated in the annual Salsa, Salsa competition at Georgia Tech July 17.
America, Georgia has the third
highest number of overweight
children in the country.
“Through gardening
programs and cooking programs,
we teach children the importance
of healthy choices. Salsa,
Salsa teaches children about
ownership and responsibility
and overseeing the plants being
watered that will be used in the
competition,” said Boys and
Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta
Marketing and Communications
Director Adrienne Leon.
Competitors must use
ingredients grown in their
own club garden, according to
Leon. Each club’s salsa was
judged based on taste, aroma,
consistency, presentation
and originality by a group of
panelists who include chefs,
restaurant owners and fitness
professionals.
Leon said it’s great to see the
Boys and Girls Club of Metro
Atlanta support initiatives that
will help benefit children beyond
the program.

DeKalb County students had the opportunity to bond with local law enforcement
agencies during an annual back-to-school event July 19.
The 10th annual “Community Day with the Sheriff” was held at Stars and Strikes
Entertainment Center in Stone Mountain. Children from kindergarten through high
school played games, bowled and ate pizza with officials from the sheriff’s office,
marshal’s department and juvenile justice department.
“The event was created to help foster positive relationships between law
enforcement and young people, and we certainly achieved that goal once again this
year,” said DeKalb County Sheriff Jeffrey Mann.
