MERGAL® K14
Fast-acting, broad-spectrum in-can preservative for aqueous systems and functional fluids

Description
Mergal® K14 is an effective, broad-spectrum liquid preservative designed to inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeast, and fungi in aqueous
systems.

Application & Use

Mergal K14 is a liquid product easily incorporated into waterborne systems. It is recommended for waterborne paints, adhesives, pigment
slurries, starch solutions and sealants. It is also useful in inks, fountain solutions, polymer emulsions, rheology modifiers, metalworking
fluids, and wax emulsions. The preservative can also be used to preserve surfactants, cleaners, and similar products. Mergal K14 is also
suitable to preserve detergents, household cleaners, and similar products. The product is fast-acting.

Mergal K14 is suited for systems with:

• pH of 3 to 9
• Temperatures up to 60°C

Product Highlights
• Broad-spectrum protection
• Headspace protection
• Fast-acting

Antimicrobial Activity

Mergal® K14 has a broad spectrum of efficacy against a wide range of microorganisms, especially bacteria. Examples of organisms
controlled by Mergal K14 are:

Bacteria MIC Fungi MIC

Bacillus subtilis 0.05 Aspergillus niger 0.02
Enterobacter aerogenes 0.05 Chaetomium globosum 0.02
Escherichia coli 0.05 Penicillium funiculosum 0.02
Proteus vulgaris 0.05 Ulocladium consortiale 0.01
Pseudomonas aeruginosa 0.02
Pseudomonas fluorescence 0.01

Yeast MIC Algae MIC

Candida albicans 0.02 Chlorella fusca 0.002
Saccharomyces cerevisiae 0.01 Anabaena cylindrica 0.002
Rhodotorula rubra 0.02
*Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) is an indication of which microorganisms can be controlled by a preservative and the concentration at which growth of the test organism
is inhibited under laboratory conditions. The lower the MIC value in ppm, the greater the product’s effectiveness. MIC values should only be used for relative comparisons.
Practical use concentrations are generally much higher and should be established through field tests and actual use

Function/Activity
Mergal K14 is typically used in paint-applications at 0.20-0.30 % by weight of final product. The level required to protect any particular
system depends on a variety of factors: initial level of microbiological contamination, the components of the system, the expected exposure
to repeated microbial intrusions, the expected shelf life, the temperature and pH of the system, etc. Suggested use levels should be verified
by field trials.

Indirect Food Contact Applications:

Mergal K14 meets the requirements of FDA Clearance 21 CFR 176.170. Under this clearance, the product is approved for the production of
paper and paperboard for contact with food.

Formulation Considerations
Mergal K14 is a liquid product easily incorporated into waterborne systems. For best results, Mergal K14 should be added as early in the
production process as possible. If high temperatures or highly alkaline pH values are expected during production, the product should be
added after these conditions are controlled or to add 1/3 of Mergal K14 in the beginning and 2/3 towards the end of the process

Mergal K14 is compatible with most known systems. The presence of strong reducing or oxidizing agents may result in the degradation of
active substances. Incompatibilities might occur with materials which can be cross linked like protein based adhesives.

Due to various possibilities of application and different methods of processing, it is advised to check compatibility in the development of
new products. Contact your Troy representative for assistance.

Shelf-life is 24 months from date of manufacture.
