UNIT – 1

Q.1 (a) Define and explain following fluid properties: (4x2=8)

i. Surface tension
ii. Viscosity
iii. Compressibility
iv. Vapour pressure

(b) Calculate the atmospheric pressure at the end of troposphere, which extends upto a
height of 9 km from sea level. Consider a temperature variation in the troposphere T=288-
0.006y. Where y is the elevation in m and T is the temperature in K. The atmospheric pressure
and temperature at sea level are 101.3 KN/M2 and 288 K respectively. The characteristics gas
constant for air is 287 J/Kg-K. (8)

OR
Q.1 (a) A multi-tube manometer is used to determine the pressure difference between points
A and B shown in figure below. For the given values of heights, determine the pressure
difference between point A and B .Specific gravities of benzene, kerosene and mercury are
0.88, 0.82 and 13.6 respectively. (10)

(b) Explain the laws of buoyancy given by the Archimedes. (6)

UNIT-2
Q.2 (a) Derive Bernoulli`s equation. Clearly mention the assumption made in this derivation of
Bernoulli`s equation. (8)
(b) Check whether the following sets of velocity components represent a possible incompressible
flow. u= 2x2-xy+z2 , v= x2-4xy+y2 , w= 2xy-yz+y2 (8)

OR
Q.2 (a) Explain the working of Orificmeter measurement device. (8)
(b) Water at 36m sea level has a velocity of 18m/s and pressure of 350 KN/m2
Determine the potential, kinetic and pressure engines of the water in meter of head and
determine the total head. (8)

UNIT-3
Q.3 A U-tube manometer is used to measure the pressure of water in a pipeline, which is in
excess of atmospheric pressure. The right limb of the manometer contain mercury and is open
to atmospheric. The contact between water and mercury is in the left limb. Determine the
pressure of water in the main line, surface of mercury is in level with the centre of the pipe. If
the pressure of water in pipeline is reduced to 9810 N/m2, calculate the new difference in the
level of mercury. Sketch the arrangement in both cases. (16)

OR
Q.3 A fluid flow field is given by: V=(x y)i + (y x)j - (2xyz+yz2)k
2 2

Prove that it is a case of possible steady incompressible fluid flow. Calculate velocity and
acceleration at point [2, 1, 3]. (16)

UNIT-4
Q.4 (a) A nozzle of diameter 20mm is fitted to a pipe of diameter 40mm. Find the force exerted
by nozzle on the water which is flowing through the pipe at the rate of 1.2 m 3/min.
(8)
(b) Derive the discharge formula for venturimeter. (8)
OR
Q.4 (a) Water flows through a 300mmX150mm horizontal venturimeter at the rate of 0.065 m/s
and the differential gauge is deflected 1.2 m, as shown in the figure below. Specific gravity of
the manometric liquid is 1.6. Determine the coefficient of discharge of the venturimeter. (8)

(b) A 20mm dam pipe split into two parts, one branch being 10mm in diameter and the other is
15mm in diameter. If the velocity in the 10mm pipe is 0.3m/s and the other pipe is 0.6m/s,
Calculate the rate of flow in cm3/s and the velocity in the 20mm diameter pipe. (8)

UNIT-5
Q.5 (a) Determine the necessary condition for stability and floating bodies considering a suitable
example. (6)
(b) A dock gate 10mm wide has sea depths of 6m and 15m on its two sides respectively. The
relative density of seawater is 1.03. Calculate the resultant force acting on the gate due to the
water pressure and find the position of the centre of pressure to the bottom of the gate.
(10)
OR
Q.5 (a) Prove that the position of centre of pressure is always below the centre of gravity
considering any suitable example. (6)
(b) A U-tube manometer is connected to a closed tank as shown in figure, containing oil having
a density of 860 kg/m3, the pressure of the air above the oil being 3500 pa. If the pressure at
point Ai nth oil is 14000 Pa and the manometer fluid had a RD of 3, determine
