The Effects of Playing Mobile legend in Academic Performance

in First Quarter of the Selected Senior High School Students of


Legacy of Wisdom Academy of Dasmariñas Inc. S.Y. 2019-2020
Chapter I

Introduction

As the internet age has begun, gradual changes that could affect our tasks and

routines in our daily lives. As the gradual rise of gaming industries, different lots of

games have been created and some of us are interested to play. There are lots of

categories of games that we may play online or offline.

In today’s generation, the continuous growth of the modern technology is

developing too fast. Because of the technology, new things were created that made our

life easier, comfortable and handy at most of the time. Mobile phone became a big part

of our lives, the way we work, the way we learn, the way we live and even the way we

play. Along with the evolution of the technology, mobile phones continue to upgrade.

Over the last decade, mobile gaming has steadily increased; it has become extremely

popular source of entertainment and leisure activities especially to the students.

Students can also learn new word and languages through because of mobile games

because it teaches them on how to enhance their reading and thinking skills, they can

even apply it from their studies if possible.

Many students stayed up late more than once playing their favorite mobile game

and they called it Mobile legend. Some of the students heard complaints their families

and significant to others about the amount of time they spend on playing mobile legend

rather than with them or spending their time to study their previous lesson. Maybe few

of them wished they could sneak a game while they are in school. But this is really a

problem nowadays.
It might be. Psychologists and scientific researchers are beginning to recognize that

playing too much mobile games (Mobile legend) is growing phenomenon. Mobile

Legend is a mobile game played over some form of mobile phone. This is usually the

internet or equivalent technology. But games have always used whatever technology

was current.

According to Choi et al. 2013; Jennifer Henderlong Corpus 2009; Van Eck 2006 the

academic performance and cognitive consequences of playing mobile games have

been an ongoing debate in both the educational environment and the public. While it is

still arguable whether playing mobile games actually affects students’ academic

performance, recent studies of many educators have considered digital games as an

educational tool to foster students’ learning interests and motivation and deliver different

levels of knowledge more effectively. Studies have shown that motivation is a crucial

catalyst for learning success and correlated with academic achievement (Jennifer

Henderlong Corpus 2009; Jurisevic et al. 2008). According to Griffith, Online game is

the trendiest entertainment in the modern societies and they target a diversity of people

in different ages. It is a leisure activity that has become an ever increasing part of many

young people’s today lives (Griffiths, 2006).

As the advent of mobile games occurs, Students failed on their grades, they gave

more of their more attention on playing mobile legend rather that doing their school

responsibilities. Some are getting sick because they spend most of their time on playing

and choose to skip eating their food on time. They also don’t have enough money to

spend for their school works if needed because they spend it already in playing mobile

legend.
Thus, this study is conducted to know if the selected senior high school students

are not focusing well on their studies just to play mobile legend, what the possible effect

of this said topic is. This study is trying to show the effect of playing mobile legend to the

academic performance of the selected senior high school students of Legacy of Wisdom

Academy of Dasmariñas Inc. The result of the study will depend upon the response of

the said population.


Statement Of The Problem

1. How does playing mobile legend affect their Academic Performance?

2. What are the disadvantages of Mobile Legends to the students of Legacy of Wisdom

Academy of Dasmariñas Inc.?

3. What are the possible effects of playing mobile legend?

Significance of the Study

The result of this study is significant to the following group

Students: This study may give information to the students about the effect of playing

mobile legend to their academic performance.

Teachers: This study may serve as the way to the teachers to determine the students

who are having lower grades because of playing mobile legend so they can help the

students to focus well on their studies.

Family: This study is significant to the family because it may help them to know if their

children are focusing well on their study.

Future researchers: It would help the future researchers that are interested in this

study. It will serve as their basis and their background about their research.

Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to determine the effects of Playing Mobile

Legend to the selected senior high school students of Legacy of Wisdom Academy of

Dasmariñas Inc. and to their academic performance.


Scope and Delimitation

The scope our study is for finding effects of Playing Mobile Legend to the

Academic Performance of the students.

The study delimited only for the selected senior high school students of Legacy

Wisdom of Academy of Dasmariñas Inc., and only on their First Quarter. The main

purpose of our study is to point out the effect of playing mobile legend and aims are

determining whether playing mobile legend hinders their accomplishment of studying.

The study only focuses on Playing Mobile legend and its effect to Academic

Performance. However, the study excludes the effects of Playing Mobile Legend to their

behavior.

Definition of Terms

Mobile Legend – Is an online game that can be played through mobile phones and

requires internet.

Gamers – A person who plays a game, especially role-playing game.

Phenomenon – A fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one

whose cause or explanation is in the question.

Hindrance – A thing that provides resistance, delay, or obstruction to something or

someone.

Academic Performance - Academic achievement or performance is the outcome of

education, the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their

educational goals.
