Community Project Outcomes

Kelsey, Barb, Anna and Kaylynn

Location: Ottumwa YMCA 4 and 5 year olds

Dates: We implemented our oral hygiene program on Monday, June 24th; Monday, July 1st; and
Thursday, July 11th .

Session One:

We attended the YMCA for the first time on Monday, June 24th. At this session we went in to each of the
classrooms and observed the children’s oral habits. Some of the habits we noticed included, nail biting,
nose picking, girls putting their hair in their mouths and chewing on it, putting toys in their mouths, and
sucking their thumb. Today we wanted to get an idea of some of the habits the children were doing and
incorporate it into our presentation at our next sessions. Sometimes children don’t even know they are
doing these things and if they do maybe no one has told them that these habits could lead to damage in
their oral cavity.

Today we also leaned that the children are involved in a tooth brushing program and a rethink your
drinking assessment that is put on by the local WIC office. They brush their teeth after lunch everyday
and learn about all the sugar that is in their drinks.

Session Two:

On Monday July 1st, we presented to two different classes. One class had fifteen four year olds and the
other class had 15 five year olds. We brought in our stuffed animals that have enlarged teeth and a big
modeled mouth with a tongue on it so the children could show us their brushing technique and we
could adjust it as needed. We discussed with the children how many times a day they needed to brush,
how long to brush, how often we needed to be going to the dentist, flossing, and how often they need
to replace their tooth brushes. Many of the children were not familiar with floss but we told them they
needed to be floss to get the sugar bugs out between their teeth. We also reviewed with them today
about their oral habits that we had observed previously.

We first demonstrated to the whole group on how to properly brush our teeth on the puppet. We then
went around to each student and asked them to show us how to brush the puppets teeth. As the
children were brushing the puppets teeth we would make adjustments as we watched. While going to
each child the other children not brushing the puppet’s teeth had a tooth sheet to color. We also used
the puppets to talk about oral habits. We would ask the puppet if he wanted to suck on his thumb and
he would shake his head no and when we brought the toothbrush to his mouth he would shake his head
yes.

After our presentation we left the kids with goody bags that included a new toothbrush, toothpaste,
floss, a flyer on why we need to keep our baby teeth healthy, and our IHCC dental clinic card. The
children and staff were so appreciative that we came to visit with them. All 4 of us felt like we were
appreciated and hopefully can make a difference in their lives with how important it is to keep a healthy
mouth.
Session Three:

On Thursday July 11, we visited both classrooms one more time with our puppets and a letter to the
children’s parents. We asked the children if they remembered what they learned at our last visit. The
children were able to remember that they should brush their teeth twice a day. At this presentation we
focused on flossing. We tied floss together and showed the children on the teeth how to floss. We also
reiterated oral habits and asked the children what do we not do and they were able to shout out put
fingers, toys, or hair in our mouths.

This session demonstrated the idea that repletion is best for children. Once they hear information over
and over again they are able to apply it better. We kept every presentation about twenty minutes so the
children would be able to pay attention better and not lose interest.

Results:

I feel the children have a better understanding of oral health. After presenting to them the first time and
coming back the second time they had remembered almost everything we had talked about from the
first day. We brought everyone a toothbrush, floss and tooth paste and told the children to replace their
old toothbrush with the new one they were getting today. At our last visit we typed up a letter that was
sent home with the children to take home to their parents stating what we reviewed with their children
and made them aware of out dental hygiene clinic at IHCC.
