 Interaction and Notes- A Story from Mexico Olympics (Pg.

30,31)

Two Olympic Champions, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, tried to

draw international attention to racial discrimination in the United
States during the Olympics of 1968. They were African Americans.
It was an important landmark in the history of the Civil Right
Movement in the United States. Their fellow Australian athlete,
Peter Norman, also showed support to them.

The International Olympics Association held them guilty of

violating the Olympic spirit by making a political statement. Their
medals were taken back and they were subjected to a lot of
criticism. But their action succeeded in gaining international
attention for the Civil Right Movement in the US.

WRITTEN WORK

 Notes, Q1. Describe the incidence that took place during the
Mexico Olympics of 1968.

2 CLASS WORK

 Discussion and Notes- Differences, Similarities, Divisions

(Pg. 31,32)

Origin of social differences- These social differences are mostly

based on accident of birth. Normally we don’t choose to belong to
our community. We belong to it simply because we are born into it.
But some of the differences are based on our choices. For e.g., some
people are atheist. Some people choose to follow a religion other
than the one in which they were born.

Every social difference does not lead to social division. Some

difference divide similar people from one another, but they also
unite different people.
WRITTEN WORK

division’. Explain the statement.

3 CLASS WORK

 Interaction and Notes- Differences, Similarities, Divisions

[contd.] (Pg. 33,34)

Overlapping and cross-cutting differences- Social divisions take

place when some social difference overlaps with other differences
Also, if social differences cross cut one another, it is difficult to pit
one group of people against the other. It mea are likely ns that
groups that share a common interest on one issue are likely to be in
different sides on a different issue.

Social divisions of one kind or another exist in most countries. It

doesn’t matter whether the country is small or big.

division?

4 CLASS WORK

 Lecture and Notes – Politics of Social Divisions (Pg.

Range of outcomes- At first sight, it would appear that the

combination of politics and social divisions are very dangerous. If
political parties start competing in terms of some existing social
divisions, it can make social divisions into political divisions and
lead to conflict, violence or even disintegration of a country.

does not lead to such disasters.

two examples.

5 CLASS WORK

 Interaction and Notes – Politics of Social Divisions [contd.]

(Pg. 34,35,36)
