UNIX is an operating system which was first developed in the 1960s, and has been under constant development ever WHO'S NEW
since. There are many different versions of UNIX, although they share common similarities. The most popular
varieties of UNIX are Sun Solaris, AIX, GNU/Linux, and MacOS X.

Everything in UNIX is either a file or a process. A process is an executing program identified by a unique PID Kowalski
(process identifier).

Directory Description
/ Root file system and root directory of the entire file system hierarchy.
/bin/ Command binaries that need to be available in single user mode e.g., cat, ls
/boot/ Boot loader files
/dev/ Essential devices
/etc/ Host-specific configuration files (example /etc/hosts).
/home/ Users' home directories - containing saved files, personal settings etc. example /home/vishnu
/lib/ Libraries essential for the binaries in /bin/ and /sbin/.
/media/ Mount points for removable media
/mnt/ Temporarily mounted file systems.
/opt/ Optional application software.
/proc/ Virtual file system documenting kernel and process status as text files (e.g., uptime, network).
/sbin/ Essential system binaries (e.g., init, route, ifup).
/tmp/ Temporary files (see also /var/tmp).
/usr/ Contains the majority of multiuser utilities and applications.
/usr/bin/ Non-essential command binaries
/usr/include/ Standard include files.
/usr/lib/ Libraries for the binaries in /usr/bin/ and /usr/sbin/.
/usr/sbin/ Non-essential system binaries
/usr/src/ Source code with its header files
/usr/local/ Tertiary hierarchy for local data, specific to this host.
/var/ Variable files, such as logs and temporary e-mail files.
/var/lock/ Lock files. Files keeping track of resources currently in use.
/var/log/ Log files. Various logs.
/var/mail/ Users' mail-boxes.
/var/run/ Information about the running system since last boot
/var/tmp/ Temporary files to be preserved between reboots.
