IV.PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous lesson

- Different Gas Laws
B. Establish the purpose of the lesson
 At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
 Identify the 3 classifications of carbohydrates,
 Value the importance of carbohydrates in our body, and
 Identify carbohydrate content on the food we eat.
 The teacher will show a Word Search Puzzle

 The teacher will call volunteers to encircle the word they can see that are related
to biomolecules (*literacy*)

C. Representing Examples
a. “Out of all the four main classes of biomolecules, the first class that we will
discuss is the Carbohydrates and its 3 classifications”
b. First, let’s define what Carbohydrate is. You are going to help me define it by
filling up the blanks that you will see in the board.
c. (there’ll be jumbled letters acting as a clue beside the blank)
i. One of the main classes of ____________(oibselucelom) is the
carbohydrate.
ii. Carbohydrates are the major source of ______ (gnerey) for the body.
iii. They consist of ______(cbaorn),_______(neghdyor), and ______(ygeoxn)
atoms.*literacy*
iv. One of the main classes of biomolecules is the carbohydrate.
Carbohydrates are the major source of energy for the body. They consist
of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
d. The teacher will ask the students what are the usual farmed products that are
commonly seen here in Kapatagan? *Localization*
e. Let’s find out what are the foods that are rich in carbohydrates and try to know
whether the farmed products you’ve mentioned earlier are one of them.
f. These are the foods that are rich in carbohydrates:
Dairy products, fruits, grains, legumes, starchy vegetables, and sugary sweets

g. Carbohydrates can be classified into the following:

i. Monosaccharide
ii. Disaccharide
iii. Polysaccharide
h. “The first classification of carbohydrates that we will discuss is the
monosaccharide.”
i. Monosaccharide - this term came from the two Greek words “mono” which
means one and “saccharon” which means sugar. These are the simplest group of
carbohydrates and are referred as simple sugars. They cannot be further
hydrolyzed to simpler compounds. Examples of this includes Glucose which is
also referred to as “dextrose” and Fructose which is found in fruits.

j. “The next classification of carbohydrates is called the disaccharide”

k. Disaccharide – also called the double sugar, is composed of two molecules of
simple sugars (monosaccharides) linked to each other. Disaccharides are
crystalline water-soluble compounds. The monosaccharides within them are
linked by a glycosidic bond. There are three major disaccharides namely sucrose,
lactose, and maltose. Sucrose is formed following photosynthesis in green plants.
Lactose is found in the milk of all mammals. Maltose is a product of the starches
during digestion.

l. “And the last classification of carbohydrates that we will tackle is the

polysaccharide”
m. Polysaccharide – is a complex carbohydrate composed of 10 to up to several
thousand monosaccharides arranged in chains. They are usually amorphous,
insoluble in water and tasteless and are called non-sugars. There are also three
main polysaccharides: starch, cellulose, and glycogen. Starch is an energy source
obtained from plants. It is usually found in rice, cereals, bread, and pastas.
Cellulose is a structural polysaccharide in plants and when consumed, it acts as a
dietary fiber. This is usually found in green leafy vegetables and beans. Glycogen
is a storage form of glucose which is found in the human liver and muscles.
n. “We all know that carbohydrates is a very important part of our life since it gives
us energy to do our daily works but we also know that in everything that we do,
we must do it in moderation or we will suffer the consequences. That’s why we
should take carbohydrates on the right amount or else we will experience these
things:”
o. Too much consumption of carbohydrates may lead to:
Obesity, diabetes, constipation, atherosclerosis, and heart diseases *Across
Curriculum: Health*
p. “So you must monitor your carbohydrate intake for you not to experience these
things.”
D. Discuss new concept and Practicing New Skills #1
a. Activity (7 minutes)
i. Divide the class into four groups
ii. The student will hold with them the food wrappers that the teacher asked
them to bring for their activity.
iii. In each group, they will list the food wrappers that they brought in a
manila paper and they will also indicate the total carbohydrates that is
present in the food wrapper that can be seen in the nutritional facts.
iv. After listing all of those, they will sum up all of the carbohydrates they
have listed. *numeracy*
v. Then they will present their work in front of the class.
E. Discuss new concept and Practicing New Skills #2
a. Activity (10 minutes)
i. Still in the same group they are in, each group will have an assigned task.
 Group 1 is to sing *musical*
 Group 2 is to dance*kinesthetic*
 Group 3 is to draw *visual*
 Group 4 is to news report *linguistic*
ii. Groups 1 and 2 have to help each other
iii. Groups 3 and 4 have to help each other
iv. Groups 1 and 2 have to make a jingle and dance performance that is
related to carbohydrates. Their jingle can be in the tune of a popular song
or they can also make their own tune.
 Group 1 has to do the singing
 Group 2 has to do the dancing
v. Groups 3 and 4 have to draw the foods that are rich in carbohydrates and
after drawing, they will present their drawing to the class and discuss the
benefits of eating carbohydrate-rich foods in a form of news report.
 Group 3 has to do the drawing
 Group 4 has to do the news reporting.
vi. The group activities will be scored based on this rubric:

F. Finding practical application of concepts

a. If you were to select your breakfast meal for tomorrow, what foods should you
include for you to have energy throughout the day?
G. Making generalization and abstraction about the lesson
 Carbohydrate is an essential biomolecule that our body needs for us to have
sufficient energy that we need so that our body can actively do our daily work.
 Carbohydrates can be found in the foods that we usually eat but we must make
sure that we just take the right amount of carbohydrates so that we will not suffer
the consequences.

H. Evaluating Learning
a. Complete the graph by selecting the right word that should be placed in each shape.
Select the words from the box below. *numeracy*
