Chapter IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents, analyzes and interprets the data gathered in the study. Presentation

of the data gathered was arranged as follows (1) the effectiveness of Banana Peel Adsorbent and

Peanut Husk Adsorbent in treating wastewater in terms of Zinc removal, (2) the difference between

the banana peel adsorbent and peanut husk adsorbent in terms of zinc removal and (3) the

efficiency of the adsorbents when adsorbent dosage is varied to 0.1 grams and 0.2 grams.

The Effectiveness of the Banana Peel and Peanut Husk Adsorbents in Treating Wastewater

in Terms of Zinc Removal

The researchers conducted an experiment to determine the effectiveness of the banana peel

and peanut husk adsorbents in treating wastewater in terms of zinc removal. The adsorbents were

tested at different samples of wastewater made of Zinc Sulphate Solution that varies in

concentrations.

The table above shows the gathered data during the experiment. The researchers made use

of 430nm as the wavelength to test the absorbance of the wastewater at different concentration due

to the wastewater was composed of Zinc Sulphate solution. The specific wavelength of Zinc is at

430nm, the only wavelength that is only factored in due to the researchers would like to determine

if there was a decrease in concentration of the Zinc in the addition of adsorbents. The data above

represents the data that is going to be utilized for the calibration curve of the wastewater.

The table above shows the data gathered during the experiment that represents the

absorption of the synthetic wastewater treated separately with 0.1grams and 0.2 grams of Peanut

Husk Adsorbent, and Banana Peel Adsorbent. The two adsorbents were separately added in

different concentrations to determine if there was a change in the concentration of Zinc in the

wastewater.

The chart above represents the graph for the calibration curve of the zinc which is the violet

line. The blue, yellow, gray and red lines represents the calibration curve for the banana peel at

0.2g addition, 0.1g banana peel adsorbent added, 0.2g of peanut husks adsorbent addition and the

0.1g of peanut husks adsorbent addition, respectively. The banana peel adsorbent with 0.2g

addition attain the highest values of absorbance during the experiment. The graph above shows

the curve of the wastewater. The banana peel adsorbent attained the second to the highest-level

curve. The lowest curve attained is the peanut husk adsorbent with 0.1g addition. In term of banana

peel adsorbent as the concentration of zinc sulphate in increases, the absorption values decrease.

However, in terms of the peanut husk adsorbent, as the concentration of zinc sulphate increases

the absorption values also increases.

The data gathered was not accurate to determine the amount of zinc removed, this is maybe due

to the researchers should have allotted a longer period of time before testing the samples added

with adsorbent.
The Efficiency of the Adsorbents when Adsorbent Dosage is varied to 0.1g and 0.2 g

Based from the table 1 and chart 1 above, in terms of the banana peel adsorbent. Addition

of 0.1 grams adsorption attained a lower value of absorbance than 0.2 grams addition. In terms of

the peanut husk adsorbent, 0.1 grams addition of adsorbent got lower values of absorbance than

0.2 grams addition. The Banana Peel is a more effective adsorbent than the Peanut Husk at small

addition of adsorbent. However, the banana peel at 0.2 grams exhibited a drastic increase in

absorption value at 1.23. This is may be due to some components in the zinc sulphate is similar

with the component of Banana Peel absorbent that the spectrophotometer may have read or

selected instead of the other. Unlike the Peanut Husk at 0.2 grams addition shows a decrease in

absorption value at 0.161. This shows that there is a significant difference of water quality using

banana peel adsorbent and peanut husk adsorbent. The absorbance drastically increases as the

amount in grams of Banana Peel Adsorbent increases. However, the absorbance decreases as the

amount in grams of Peanut Husk increases. The Banana Peel is an effective adsorbent at lower

number of grams added unlike the Peanut Husk Adsorbent, it is more affective at higher number

of grams added.
