IV. PROCEDURES
ENGAGE
A. Reviewing  Review the pupils on the concept of heat and
previous lesson temperature. Have the pupils play the game 4 Pics, 1
or presenting Word to recall heat and temperature.
the new lesson
- Class do you know the mobile game 4 Pics, 1 Word? Do
you play it in your phone? Do you want to play this game
now?
I will show you 4 pics, then give me 1 word that is shown
or depicted by these pictures.

TEMPERATURE, HOT, COLD

MELT, HARDEN

 When the pupils are able to give the terms temperature,

hot and cold, ask them the relationship of temperature
with hotness or coldness.

- If the temperature inside a room is high, what can you

say about the hotness or coldness in the room? Will you
feel warm or cold?
- What temperature will we feel warmer? 28 degrees
Celsius or 34 degrees Celsius?

 Use also the game 4 Pics, 1 Word to introduce terms to

be used in the new lesson (MELT, SOFT, HARD, BIG,
SMALL)

B. Establishing a  Have pupils view a video on Youtube

purpose for the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t94VqIFMveI .
lesson
- Class you are going to watch a video from Youtube. In
this video, you will observe how an ice cube changes
when place over a hot surface or heated pan.

- Before we play the video, may I ask you first a question.

What do you think will happen to the ice cube when
heated over the hot pan? Can you give your prediction?
Write you prediction on a slip of colored paper then place
it on the first column of the prediction chart posted on the
board.

- (After watching the video) Based on the video, what did

you observe with the ice cube? Write your observations
on the slip of colored paper you have and place it on the
second column of the prediction chart.

Prediction Observation
For Classroom Observation – 1st Quarter

- What can you say about the temperature when ice cube
was placed over the flame? What happened to the ice
cube after it was placed over the flame? Is there any
change happened?

C. Presenting - So you have seen how the ice cube changed when put
Examples/insta over the flame. How about other materials? What
nces of new changes happen other materials when they are heated?
You are going to perform an activity where you are to
lesson
explore on other materials and find out and describe the
changes that will happen as they are heated.

EXPLORE
D. Discussing  Have pupils work in groups in performing Activity 1 – “What
new concepts Happens to Solid Materials when Heated?” Each group will
and practicing be given a different solid material to work on.
new skills #1
 Set norms and standard to be followed in performing the
activity

- In your group, assign a leader, secretary, presenters,

material manager and time keeper.

- You are given 10 minutes to perform the activity and 5

minutes to finish your write-up or results.

- Groups who will show maximum participation, order

and discipline in performing the activity will be awarded
with paper ducks as form of praise. These paper ducks
can be converted later on into chocolates as your
prizes.

 Remind pupils on safety precautionary measures to

observe in carrying out the activity.

- Since you will be heating materials and you will be

using fire in the activity, what precautionary measures
will you observe to avoid accidents or injuries?

Be careful with the burner. Do not play with the flame

for it may cause fire inside the classroom.

The tin can used in containing the solid material will

become hot. To avoid getting burned, use thick rug or
tongs in holding it and handle it with care.

 Distribute materials and activity sheets. Facilitate the

groups as they perform the activity. Instruct the groups to

strictly follow the procedure in performing the activity. Tell
them that after performing the activity, they will be
preparing various outputs for them to summarize their
results in the activity: Group 1- Illustration/drawing, Group
2- Paragraph, Group 3 - Venn Diagram
EXPLAIN
E. Discussing new  Have the presenters of each group display and discuss
concepts and their results in class. Give each group 2 minutes to
practicing new present their results.

margarine (butter) before and after it was heated

 Process pupils’ results by discussing their answers on the

guide questions.
- What happened to the material when heated? Why?
(The material changed its form from solid to liquid. It
melts because the material is heated/absorbed heat.)
- How would you describe the change/s that happened
to the material when heated? (The material changed
its form from solid to liquid. It also changed its size,
shape and texture.)

 Clarify misconceptions when needed.

For Classroom Observation – 1st Quarter
ELABORATE
G. Finding - Have you once observed what happened to the
Practical cooking oil in your kitchen during a very cold
applications of weather? When the cooking oil inside the bottle
concepts and solidified and your mother needs to get certain
skills amount of it for her recipe, what does she do to get
some amount?

H. Making  Have the pupils construct and express their own

generalizations understanding by asking this question:
and - How will you describe the properties of the materials
abstractions when exposed to temperature?
about the - What changes take place when a material is heated?
lesson  Ask a volunteer to complete the sentence,

When solid materials are heated, their ___________,

______________ and ___________ change.

EVALUATE
I. Evaluating Prepare the pupils in answering the formative assessment below.
Learning Have them bring out their notebook and copy the diagram where
they will write on their answers.

Read the situation below answer the questions that

follow:

Joey bought an ice

cream. He had to go to
her mother first to give
the change of money he
used in buying. So he
placed the ice cream on
top of a table and look
for her mother. After few minutes, when Joey came back
for his ice cream, he was so sad to see it melted.

1. How would you describe the change happened to the

form, texture and size of Joey’s ice cream when left
on top of the table?
