THE EFFECT OF HOMEWORK TOWARD STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN

LEARNING CHEMISTRY

RESULT :
- Student who were receiving Instructional Homework Technique
(IHT) scored higher on a chemistry posttest achievement
measure than those who were not receiving IHT. It seems that IHT
could be viewed as an active learning approach since students
could be viewed as active learners when they use knowledge they
have constructed from the homework assignment. It appears that
IHT may enhance constructing student’ scientific prior knowledge
base. It is more likely that IHT enhances students review skills and
increases their participation rate in classroom discussion.
Furthermore , it appears that IHT could promote students’ positive
attitude toward chemistry and increase the likelihood of the student
in learning materials in class.
-
FINDING :
- Analysis of the regression results indicated that for Grade 3
students the percent of homework completed was a statistically
significant predictor of how the students scored on the weekly tests
and the second most important predictor of how the students would
perform Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) Norm
Reference Test (NRT)
- The hierarchical regression analysis demonstrated that homework
performance was significantly related to the students’ average test
score and their score on the FCAT NRT after controlling for the
others variables
IMPLICATION :
- Teachers teach should become aware about the importance of the
instructional homework and consider homework as a viable
instructional tool.
- Teachers should carefully plan for the homework assigments so
that homerwork can support students’ learning
- IHT offers a significant potential for the development of chemistry
education at the secondary teaching method. It should become a
part of school science teaching method.
- Students at high schools should recieve homework prior to the
formal instruction and it should be part of science teacher
educations program
CONTRIBUTION :
- Research relate to IHT should consider other variables that were
not included in the current study. Such ass students’ attitudes
toward IHT, students’ paticipation level in classroom instuctional
activities where IHT is applied and home support for homework
assigment completion.
- Using mixed methods approach that offers insights into how
students undertake the IHT and normal homework assignments
relating to specific chemistry topics that examining the effect of
IHT
- Research should utilize a large set of criteria to determine the
effectiveness of homework on achievement
- Researchers not only look at performance on evaluations whether
teacher developed or standardized, but also at other outcomes that
can be viewed as successes. Some of other outcomes are improved
motivation, better study habits, and improved critical thingking
skills
