Discussion:

For Part 1, there were six reactions. The researchers used copper and zinc to react with three another
reactants, namely copper (III) nitrate, silver nitrate, and HCl. As a result, Zinc did react to the three
substances mentioned, while Copper only reacted to silver nitrate. The reactions are better explained
in the Activity Series. In the Activity Series, Zinc can replace copper, silver, and hydrogen; while
copper can only replace silver. That is why there was no reaction in the copper when added with
either copper (III) nitrate or HCl.

For Part 2, the cyclohexane, which color appears on the top, changes colors when different reactant
were put in it. For part 2b, Potassium bromide and chlorine was added with cyclohexane. Since in the
Activity Series, Chlorine can replace Bromine, thus the color of the cyclohexane changed into ___. For
Part 2c, Potassium bromide and iodine were also added, but since iodine cannot replace iodine, the
color of cyclohexane became ____. For Part 2d, Potassium iodide and bromine were added, but since
bromine can replace iodine, the color of cyclohexane became ____.For Part 2e, Potassium iodide and
chlorine were mixed, but since chlorine can replace iodine, the color of cyclohexane became ____.
Some results were affected due to time constraints, and also due to the approximation of the
volumes of some reactants used in the experiment. For better results, further experimentation and
proper procedures must be done.

Abstract:

In this experiment, the researchers observed the reactions of different substances. The experiment
was divided into two parts: reaction with metals (Part 1) and reaction with nonmetals (Part 2). For
part 1, copper and zinc were used to mix with copper (III) nitrate, silver nitrate, and Hydrochloric acid
(HCl). For Part 2, cyclohexane was used to determine the color change whenever the reactants were
mixed with it. Different results showed on the experment. For part 1, some reactants really react and
some were not. For part 2, there were significant color changes of cyclohexane after the other
nonmetal reactants were combined. All in all, substances will react to another substance if they can
replace one of the element of their another reactant.
