Four Sisters Farmers Market to Host Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan

Minneapolis, Minnesota – On August 8th, 2019 the Four Sisters Farmers Market will
celebrate National Farmers Market Week by hosting special guest Lt. Governor Peggy
Flanagan from 1 pm - 1:45 pm. The event will include a presentation of the Minnesota
Farmers Market Week proclamation from Governor Walz, sampling of delicious farm fresh
foods, an arts activity hosted by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and music.

The Native American Community Development Institute (NACDI) launched the Four Sisters
Farmers Market in 2006 to improve healthy food access in the American Indian Cultural
Corridor. The Market makes efforts to keep healthy food affordable by participating in the
Market Bucks and Farmers Market Nutrition Programs and accepting SNAP benefits.

National Farmers Market Week is the first week of every August, a time when the growing
season is reaching its peak and markets are especially abundant with locally-grown
produce. National Farmers Market Week was first proclaimed in 1999 by the USDA to
celebrate the rich history of farmers markets and the wide variety of benefits farmers
markets bring to small-scale food producers, communities, families, and individuals.

David Nicholson, who has worked with Four Sisters and markets across the state on behalf
of MDH to help them accept EBT stated, “...Four Sisters is an expression of its host
community. It is filled with art, music, and dance. The market hosts a variety of established
and micro-entrepreneurial vendors. It provides an access point for foods spanning a range
of possibilities—fresh and prepared, indigenous, non-indigenous, and fusion foods. It acts
as a hub for community information, advocacy, and resources. The market generates traffic
and revenue for local businesses.”
