OLAM INDUSTRIAL REPORT

OLAM AGRO INDIA Ltd. is an agro based industry that has its presence across 77 countries in the
world. It is one of the top suppliers of seeds, frozen and dried fruit in India. Our visit was to the OLAM
AGRO IND PVT LTD in Vizianagaram which is listed in Trade India's list of verified sellers offering
supreme quality of sesame seeds, almonds, peanuts etc.

The industrial visit to OLAM was a great experience and good exposure to us as we were able to relate
management concepts in the manufacturing plant. The Operating process of the plant was useful to us
to connect and relate to the concepts of management such as operational management, planning,
staffing, coordinating, organising and also scheduling. We were given the opportunity to witness the
entire process of turning out Raw Cashew Nuts(RCN)into a Polished and Packed final product Cashew.
We were able to figure out some facts related to the raw material conversion into the finished good as
follows:
1. The raw cashew Nuts are imported from South East and West Africa, this is because the cost
of the cashew is low and the craft is high.
2. The inventory they get is of 800 metric ton capacity.
3. The classification of cashew is usually done on the basis of its size measuring 17 – 24 mm
4. Later they boil the and test the cashew on the basis of two parameters such as MOISTURE
CONTENT & YIELD. The moisture content should range between 6-7%.
5. They also differentiate the boiled cashew on the basis of Immature, Empty, Spot and
Brown(damaged) and are then sent to the further process.

PROCESS:
After classifying the cashew on the basis of its size and then boiling it. The cashews are then peeled
out of its outer layer i.e. its shell and were cut down. Generally, the cutting process is done after 24
hours of boiling with the help of cutting machines that consists of 15 lines.
The next stage of cutting down the cashew is CARNEL, here the segregation is done under two
conditions:
i) Wholes ii) Shells
And also on the basis of colour cashews are sorted and are then sent to HUMIDIFICATION process for
8hours at 80°C, and it only requires 2% moisture to do so. After heating the RCN, it is sent for
HUMIDIFICATION where it is required to maintain 4 – 4.5% level of moisture. To maintain this level of
moisture forced cooling is done by using water coolers. At a later stage NANOSIZER GRADING is
done based on the weights and in the FUMIGATION & INFRA RED SECTION the bacteria and larva
are killed by applying electrical heating of 200°C. The heat applied is then brought down by applying
forces cooling and finally the RAW CASHEW NUTS are converted and packed into a FINISHED
PRODUCT OF CASHEW.
FUNCTIONAL AREAS OF OLAM:
They had framed a few set of daily targets to keep a check on their capacity and capability as follows:
Shelling - 700 bags per day
Grading - 600 bags per day
Apart from the manufacturing process in the plant, we've also learnt about their organisational values
that they follow such as
● Integrity
● Mutual Respect & Team Work
● Ownership
One of the other main aspects that OLAM is able to promote is safety and welfare of an employee it is
observed when we found majority of the women working in the plant. This step towards safety and
welfare of employee is taken forward by recruiting women from the nearby villages and encourage them
to be independent, prioritise their capability and provide them with proper financial assistance.

This particular INDUSTRIAL VISIT to OLAM has helped us learn about, how an organisation in the
world is able to succeed in reaching its organisational goal/objective and also helped us know that
success of every organization lies in its own values, principles and trust.
