Subject: Wetlands are collecting trash and having an algae problem

Date: June 23, 2019

Dear Mrs. Gwen Woods,

Intro
Thank you for a great job with our last major project. Without your knowledge of rare
birds, it would have taken a much longer time to find such rare birds. There are a few
areas that I see as a team we could improve on.

Wetlands problems with trash

When walking around the wetlands I have been seeing a lot of trash and debris. There
have to be teams going out daily to care for the wetlands. I have heard that the teams
are going out about twice a week but that is clearly not enough. Sit down with the teams
to go over the protocol for trash located on the wetlands and that attention to detail can
make such a difference. If we continue to leave trash and debris it will only cause more
problems with the animal's habitat.

Wetlands problems with algae

Something else I have seen while out walking about was the amount of algae. Algae
should be closely monitored on a daily basis. With algae becoming out of control that
would only lead to very dangerous algae blooms. Algae blooms can lead to ecosystem
break down. Also, it will allow us to know if the close by areas of commercial farming
and or the soy filed are not properly handling their waste. Testing will need to be done in
these areas to make sure there is no other apparent reason but just normal biodiversity
of the wetlands.

Solutions for trash

When it comes to the trash that has been left around the wetlands. Let’s get a group of
five people and divide them equally over the wetlands. They will need to have a trash
bags and a pickup stick. Once the bag is full they have finished for the day. We will
continue this Monday through Friday until all this matter is under control. Then we will
do this every other day from there on out.
Solutions for the algae
We need to start testing the algae once a day. This way we have a clear understanding
when it is improving and when it would be declining. From there we will send out letters
to all on the near by farmers on the results from the testing. In that letter we will explain
to them how it is important for them to watch the run off from their fields. The test will
also let us know which fertilizers are getting into the wetlands. From there we can take
things to the next level if need be.

Thank you
Thanks for always giving 150% on whatever you do. So if you have any questions or
concerns please let me know.

Sincerely,
Victoria Ross Director of Wetland Safety
