Private Cloud, Public cloud, On Premise

Public Cloud – Software is 100% managed by SAP as the “cloud provider” with updates
automatically pushed to the systems on a timeline defined by SAP with tightly controlled
configuration and extension frameworks. For example SuccessFactors, Concur, FieldGlass, Cloud 4
Customer, Ariba, and Hybrishave public cloud delivery models. The first offerings of S4HANA will be
offered as Public Cloud offerings. Also HANA Cloud Platform (HCP) is offered in the public cloud
model and can be used to extend applications (instead of doing this inside) in any of the other
deployment models.
Private Cloud – Software is 100% managed by SAP as the “cloud provider” but update schedules
are agreed with the customer, some software modifications are allowed but these will increase the
fees to run the system (as it is harder to manage). S4HANA will offer this model and Business Suite
is offered this way via the HANA Enterprise Cloud for customers that run it on SAP HANA.
On Premise – This is the model that most SAP customers are familiar with, where software is
installed and run by the customer (sometimes this is done by an outsources service provider or
hosted by a service provider). In this model we can have as many modification as we like – but they
will increase the cost of ownership as each needs to be considered each time an upgrade / patch is
applied. S4HANA will be offered in this model.
One analogy that I like is that of the Mobile Phone :-
Public Cloud – This would be how my Mum consumes her SmartPhone, she comes to me and tells
me what she wants, I set it up and she uses it. When she wants something difficult, I tell her that the

phone can’t do that

Private Cloud – This is a bit like how I use my SmartPhone, I have loads of apps and accessories
but all of them have come from the phones app store and are supported by the phones
manufacturer.
On Premise – With HANA – This is like my daughters SmartPhone which she has hacked to mean
that she has access to the guts of the phone, writes her own apps and downloads stuff from un-
official websites – all at her risk.
On Premise – Without HANA – This is like not running a SmartPhone and saying “why do I need to
do anything but phone, text ?”.

Private, Public and Hybrid Cloud

In previous article Introduction to Cloud Computing and Cloud Computing - SaaS, Paas
and IaaS Models we explained the basic features and different models of cloud
computing.
In this article we will explain the differences between Private, Public and Hybrid cloud.
Private Cloud

Private Clouds consist of cloud infrastructure that is deployed solely for a single
organization, whether managed internally or hosted by a third-party externally.
These clouds offer the greatest level of security and control, but they require the
company to still purchase and maintain all the software and infrastructure, which
reduces the cost savings.
There are two variations of private clouds:

On-Premise Private Cloud: This is also known as an “Internal Cloud,” is hosted within
an organization’s own data center. It provides a more standardized process and
protection, but is often limited in size and scalability. On-Premise Private Clouds are
best used for applications that require complete control and configurability of the
infrastructure and security.

Externally Hosted Private Cloud: This private cloud model is hosted by an external
cloud computing provider. The service provider facilitates an exclusive cloud
environment with full guarantee of privacy. This format is recommended for
organizations that prefer not to use a public cloud infrastructure due to the risks
associated with the sharing of physical resources.

Best suited for:

Private cloud is best suited for businesses that must comply with strict regulations or
that have highly critical applications will choose internal Private Clouds. With a private
cloud, businesses install their own server and storage hardware but have the flexibility
to shift workloads among servers as usage spikes or they deploy new applications.

Public Clouds

A Public Cloud is one that’s based on the standard cloud computing model
whereservices, applications and storage are made available to users over the
Internet - typically on a Pay Per Use model. While Public Clouds are appealing to
many businesses as they reduce complexity and lead times, because the underlying
architecture is fixed, there is less scope for customization for security and performance.

Public clouds are owned and operated by third party service providers. Customers
benefit from economies of scale, because infrastructure costs are spread across all
users, thus allowing each individual client to operate on a low-cost, “pay-as-you-go”
model. Another advantage of public cloud infrastructures is that they are typically larger
in scale than an in-house enterprise cloud, which provides clients with seamless, on-
demand scalability.

Best suited for:

Public cloud is best suited for companies that need to bring a service to market quickly,
have less regulatory hurdles to overcome, or are looking to outsource part or all of their
organizational IT requirements. Under this scenario, the business can simply sign-up for
and start using Cloud Computing, online storage and other services immediately.

Note:
The lines between private and public clouds are blurring. For example, some public
cloud companies are now offering private versions of their public clouds. Some
companies that only offered private cloud technologies are now offering public versions
of those same capabilities.

Hybrid Cloud

As the name suggests, a hybrid cloud comprises both private (internal) and public
(external) cloud services.
Hybrid Clouds combine the advantages of both the public and private cloud models. In a
hybrid cloud, a company can leverage third party cloud providers in either a full or
partial manner. This increases the flexibility of computing.
For example, suppose your company offers services that are tailored for different
vertical markets. You can use a public cloud to interact with the clients but keep their
data secured within a private cloud.

Best suited for:

Hybrid cloud is best suited for E-commerce. Because e-commerce sites must respond
to fluctuations in traffic both on a daily and seasonal cycle, the actual work of
processing the orders can benefit from the elastic characteristics of public cloud
resources. On the other hand, legal regulations strictly govern how personal and
payment information can be handled, and this type of sensitive data is more secure if it
stays “on-premise” in the Private Cloud. This hybrid solution represents the best of both
worlds as it places the order processing and transactional front-end of the shop where it
can take advantage of resource scalability, while it keeps the payment and account
management services strictly private.
SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) - How It is different from
SAP Cloud Platform?

From last few years, SAP is exponentially growing its business in Cloud market. The SAP Cloud

Platform has been placed as the center of SAP's innovation and strategy. At the same time,

SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) helps customer to guide them in their cloud roadmap.

In this article, we will try to explain what is SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) and how it is

different from SAP Cloud Platform.

Note: It is advisable to know the difference between about private and public cloud to

understand HANA Enterprise Cloud more clearly. Please refer to the article Difference between

Private and Public Cloud

What is SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC)?

SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud is a private cloud offering by SAP. It allows customers and

partners to deploy HANA application, SAP ERP, CRM, SAP BW etc. in their private cloud, which

is fully managed and supported by SAP. SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud also supports custom

HANA applications, including non-SAP centric ones.

SAP makes the HANA Enterprise Cloud available via data centers worldwide. HEC managed

services include backups, patching, provisioning and upgrades, restore and recovery,

infrastructure monitoring and event detection-all in a private cloud environment.

Customers can bring their own (already licensed) SAP applications into HEC or tap into

subscription-based pricing on SAP software.

Difference between HEC and a traditional hosting provider?

The primary characteristic of HEC is that it is a complete managed service by which SAP

provides the infrastructure as well as the deployment and management of the

applications.

In addition, customers benefit from SAP's deep expertise in SAP technologies and HANA. The

data centers are run entirely by SAP team. Other benefits, include a reduction in IT

management costs and the ability for customers to offload system upgrades to SAP.
Should I choose HANA
Enterprise Cloud over HANA on
premises?
HANA Enterprise Cloud, may offer some distinct advantages for some
enterprises, as compared with on-premises HANA.

Companies that have already invested significantly in hardware, storage, and

infrastructure will take longer to transition to the SAP HANA on-premises
offering to save costs and reduce business risks. But companies willing
to consider SAP HANA cloud as their platform as a service don't need to wait
that long to realize business benefits. Here are four reasons you might want to
consider a move to the HANA cloud:

 Cost. Hosting HANA Enterprise Cloud versus HANA on premises means

companies do not have to maintain the entire infrastructure, which
translates to cost savings. Moreover, with the data processing and
compression capabilities of HANA Enterprise Cloud, the hardware and
storage required is also minimal. Lower software licensing costs also
remains a compelling reason to opt for the cloud.

 Benefit. HANA Enterprise Cloud offers a far easier, quicker and cheaper
means of scalability, should the need for more storage arise. The data
footprint is also greatly reduced. A move to the cloud may also obviate a
need for Business Warehouse and its data repository for creating
meaningful analytics.

 Flexibility. Enterprise Cloud is also an ideal platform to test and deploy

custom-developed apps, programs and interfaces as a means of bringing
immediate business improvements.
 Controllable risk. Migrating to HANA Enterprise Cloud does require a
concerted approach to critically evaluate the positive impact on business.
However, if effectively monitored and controlled, the risks of transitioning to
HANA Enterprise Cloud can be minimized.

Although it's difficult to quantify all the benefits at this early stage, HANA
Enterprise Cloud has the potential to bring significant productivity
improvements, such as faster business transactions, instant availability of
reports, and new functionality and tools that are native to SAP HANA only.
