Activity Title: SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS

Objective: to design an experiment using the steps of the scientific method

I. IDENTIFYING OBSERVATION, INFERENCE, and HYPOTHESIS

Directions: Identify the following statements as observation, inference or
hypothesis.
_______________1) The leaves of the plant turned yellow after placing it inside
the house.
_______________2) The leaves turned yellow when placed inside the house
because of lack of sunlight.
_______________3) The longer the plants are kept inside the room, the more
leaves will turn yellow.
_______________4) The smell of the perfume spreads in the room.
_______________5) The higher the temperature, the faster the diffusion of the
smell of the perfume.

II. MAKING OBSERVATION AND INFERENCES

Directions: Based on the pictures below, write your observation and inference.

6) OBSERVATION:

7) INFERENCE:

8) OBSERVATION:

9) INFERNCE:
III. DETERMINING VARIABLES in the EXPERIMENT
Directions: Read the experiment below and answer the following questions.

Hermes wanted to discover if nuts or peas grow best in the soil in his garden. He
planted nuts in a corner under a tree, and planted peas in full sunlight.

10) List all the variables in Hermes’ experiment.

____________ ________________ ________________ ________________

11) What is the controlled variable in the experiment? _______________________

12) What is the error in Hermes’ experiment? ________________________________

13) How could Hermes improve his experiment?

IV. FORMULATING HYPOTHESIS

Directions: formulate a hypothesis using the variables.

14) INDEPENDENT VARIABLE: temperature of water

DEPENDENT VARIABLE: time to cook an egg
HYPOTHESIS:
____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________

15) INDEPENDENT VARIABLE: frequency of smoking

DEPENDENT VARIABLE: cases of respiratory diseases
HYPOTHESIS:
____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________

V. INTERPRETING DATA
Directions: use the table below to answer the questions.

Set-Up Initial Frequency of Treatment given for three Growth of

height of watering weeks plant
plant

A 15 cm Twice a week 200 ml of water 18 cm

B 15 cm Twice a week 200 ml of fertilizer solution 32 cm

16) Which plant has the greatest growth rate? Set-up A or B? _________________

17) What factors affect the growth of the plants? _____________________________

18) What is the table all about? ____________________________________________

Activity Title: SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS

Objective: to design an experiment using the steps of the scientific method

Design your own experiment by following the steps:

1. Identify the materials and lay out a procedure. A procedure is a plan that you
will follow in your experiment. It tells what materials to use and how to use
them.
2. Perform the procedure and gather data.
3. From the data that you recorded, form a conclusion about your result. If your
conclusion supports your hypothesis, then your hypothesis is reliable.
4. If the data does not support your hypothesis, then you have to revise or make
another hypothesis and repeat the process of testing.

(Use the format below.)
