Geological Setting

2.1 Regional Geology

Geological condition of the study area has been investigated by previous

researchers and published in Regional Geological Map Sheet Atambua by K.
Suwitodirjo and S. Tjokrosapoetro, et al, 1996 and survey area is part of the
geological sheet. Here is a resume of regional geology in the area of survey.
Physiographicaly, survey area a part of Timor island, located on central
northern of the island, undulated and rugged surface. The geology condition of
this area is very complex, tectonic process occurs on several periods. The
outcome of this tectonic process are complex structure, many of rock types
(igneous, sediment, metamorphic) and ages (from quarter to perm).
Some rock types resulted from tectonic process of this area :
 Igneous rock : breccias, lava, tuff
 Sediment rock : lime stone, calsilutite, sand stone, shale, clay
 Metamorphic rock : slate, schist, phillit, amphibole and granulite

Development of tectonic process at this island, occurs from cretaceous

age to late of Eocene. Tectonic process that affected survey area is subduction
process which is happening at Miocene age. This subduction process develop
volcanisme at northern part of the island, which is resuting some rock formation.
Manamas formation (rock formation of survey area) is an ouctcome this
volcanisme process.
Some of rock formation at Timor island :
 Bisane Formation (Pb)
 Aitutu Formation (TRa)
 Wailuli Formation (Jw)
 Nakfunu Formation (Kna)

 Ofu Formation (Tko)

 Coral Limestone (Ql)
 Haulasi Formation (Tpah)
 Haulasi Formation (Tpah)
 Ultra basa (Ub), consists of lerzolite and serpentinite with
chrisotile and magnesite (MgO) minerals as its alteration
 Noele Formation (QTn)
 Aluvium (Qa), shale, sand, mud, gravel
 Manamas Formation (Tmm),volcanic breccias, lava, tuffs

Geological structures identified on this area are :

 Contact
 Fault
 Thrust fault
 Strike slip fault
 Lineament
 Anticline
 fold

Geology of survey area
Morphology, survey area identified as undulated and rugged area, with some
intermitten rivers bearing to north.
Stratigraphically, survey area has two main rock formation :
 Manamas Formation (Tmm),volcanic breccias, lava, tuffs
 Aluvium (Qa), shale, sand, mud, gravel

Structures, it has a major structure at southern part which is a thrust fault.

Survey area is upper part of this fault
