I.

INTRODUCTION

In the modern world, technology has taken over without a doubt. Despite the advantages
the online media has caused, disadvantages could not, however, be concealed. Online media, as
part of the said technology, produces ill-effects within people, especially to the younger generation.
When it comes to the academic matter, the internet, specifically social media, has immensely
spread like a virus slowly penetrating the mental, physical, and social system of students. The
status of students’ performances in school seemed to have deteriorated over the past years since
the rise of online social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
In an article posted in Performancing.com, there are eight enumerated negative effects of
social media on students. These are: reduced learning and research capabilities, multitasking,
reduction in real human contact, reduction of command over language usage and creative writing
skills, time wastage, low grades, loss of motivation in students, and effect on health. Knowing such
harmful impacts is quite alarming especially when students’ mentality and behavior are already at
stake.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

General Problem:
How do online social platforms affect Mapandan National High School’s Grade 10
students in their MAPEH performances?

Specific Problems:
1. What is the online social platform that greatly affects such Grade 10 students in
their MAPEH performances?
2. What is the vital role of gender in social media use?
3. What are the specific negative effects of social media in Grade 10 students’
performances in MAPEH?
4. What is the ideology of said Grade 10 students regarding the utilization of modern
technology?
5. What could be a possible solution to manage the use of online social platforms in
the academic field?
III. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

General Objective:
To be able to know how online social platforms affect Mapandan National High
School’s Grade 10 students in their MAPEH performances.

Specific Objectives:
1. To determine the online social platform that greatly affects such Grade 10 students
in their MAPEH performances.
2. To determine the vital role of gender in social media use.
3. To determine specific negative effects of social media in Grade 10 students’
performances in MAPEH.
4. To reveal the ideology of said Grade 10 students regarding the utilization of
modern technology.
5. To come up with a possible solution to manage the use of online social platforms
in the academic field.

IV. SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

Social media impacts every person utilizing it. Although there is a wider scope of
individuals influenced by online social platforms, this research only aims to extract results
from Grade 10 students of Mapandan National High School. Also, generally, academic
performances of students are affected. However, as far as this research is concerned, students’
performances in Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health (MAPEH) will only be studied.
