Title: Ethical Dilemma

“An ethical dilemma is a conflict between alternatives where, no matter what a person
does, some ethical principle will be compromised.”

Little background of the story

The main character Gurukant Desai (Guru) is the son of headmaster of local school in a
backward indian village. he has fear of nothing and lot of dreams in his little mind. In his early
age, he applies for labor job in foreign country. He works there in a company where he realizes his
potential. Guru builds his business empire by whatever means he can. The whole story revolves
around how business owner guru rises from rags to riches.
Ethical Dilemma and Guru’s deed
When Guru moves to the city, he finds that only rich men have permit to join business. The
laws are made in favor of only rich and powerful people. So anyone else who is poor or not
powerful enough or with no connections but willing to do business could not thrive in business.
So, Guru obtains a trading permit by trapping a government official. He brings truckloads of
polyester cloths to his house so as if it would seem that the official had seized those items from
Guru by unfairly exercising his power. So eventually, official agrees to give permits to traders.
My opinion
After watching this movie, I came to realize that to achieve success a person may have to
undergo difficult circumstances and some situations may carry ethical dilemmas with them.
Many times laws are written by the powerful, and it is also true that you have to work
legally to achieve success, but what would someone do if there is injustice, no opportunity to prove
onerself and no one to hear your voice.
So after getting into the city Guru had choices - to give up on his dreams and let the family,
his partners suffer or go to the court or to fight against this system for himself and for other small
traders no matter by what means. He chooses to go with third one which was not ethical.
rich men of that time always want to maintain their monopoly in corporate world. they
were powerful too, they could easily bribe high authority to get result in their favor so going to
court wasn’t good option and give up is not wise option as well.
The govt. officer closes the door of business by coming in the influence of rich men, that’s
why guru has to take a step like this just to save his and many others’ business. Ok, it seems unfair
and unethical. But when we look at the situation in which Guru was he seems very right to have
done it. His deed was not ethical, but his thought was ethical that everyone should have equal
opportunity to prosper. So in my opinion it was right deed.
