1.0 SCOPE

This specification deals with the work of concrete lining in canals.

2.0 CODES & STANDARDS

IS 5256 : Sealing expansion joints in concrete lining of canals


IS 10430 : Criteria for design of Lined canals and Guidance for selection of type of lining
IS 13143 : Joints in Concrete lining of Canals — Sealing Compound

Note: - Latest Edition of all codes and standards shall be followed

4.0 MATERIALS

Refer specification No. 6-68-0002

5.0 SURFACE PREPARATION


Section of canal shall be prepared and trimmed to the required shape slope and dimensions.
Loose pockets, if any, on the sides and bottoms shall removed and made good with approved
soil and thoroughly compacted to get a firm surface.
6.0 MIXING, PLACING AND FINISHING OF CONCRETE

Refer specification No. 6-68-0004


7.0 CURING

7.1 Subsequent to laying and finishing of concrete lining and after a period of 24 to 36 hours, the
linings shall be cured for at least 28 days.

7.2 On the bed curing may be done by constructing 15.0 cm. deep earthen bunds across the bed so
that a small depth of water will stand on the bed. Curing of side slopes and coping shall be done
by wet jute lining or by using sprinkler.

8.0 JOINTS IN CONCRETE LINING

8.1 Contraction Joints

8.1.1 Contraction joints shall be provided at 4.5 m c/c transversely along the length of canal and
junction with bed concrete and berm side along the length of canal, or at places shown in the
drg. or as directed by the Engineer-in-Charge.

8.1.2 When lining is cast in panels, transverse and longitudinal grooves shall be provided at locations
as per clause no. 8.1.1.

8.1.3 In situ sleepers in case of bed and precast in case of sides shall be provided under the joints. The
sleeper shall be 15mm wide and 7.5mm deep. The sleepers shall be placed centrally below the
joint. Concrete used for sleepers shall be of the same grade as for lining.

8.1.4 Filler

The grooves in canal lining shall be filled with mastic filler as per IS: 5256. The grooves shall be
clean and free from foreign substances where mastic filler is applied. Grooves shall not be
filled while it is raining or while there is free water in the grooves. The grooves shall be filled as
soon as the concrete has become sufficiently stiff to prevent appreciable distortion of groove and
damage to the concrete.

8.2 Expansion Joints

8.2.1 Expansion Joints shall be provided and constructed at places shown in the drawing and as
directed by the Engineer-in-charge.

8.2.2 The Joints wherever required shall be 20mm wide

8.2.3 The Joints shall be thoroughly cleaned of all dirt, organic matter, dust, etc. The Joints then shall
be filled with bitumen mix filler as specified in the item except for 25mm depth at top. The top
25mm of the joints shall be filled with approved hot applied sealing compound conforming to
IS: 5256.

9.0 STEPS IN SIDE SLOPES OF CANAL

Steps shall be provided and constructed at places shown in the drawing and as directed by
Engineer-in-charge.
Steps wherever required, shall be constructed, as specified in relevant item.

10.0 ACCEPTANCE/TESTING

On completion of the work, the canal shall be filled with water upto maximum water level.
Level of water shall be recorded for a period of 3 days at an interval of 24 hr. The average water
loss shall not be more than 0.60 m 3/sec. per million square meter of wetted perimeter. Any
defect noted or pointed out by the Engineer-in-charge shall be rectified by contractor at his own
cost to the satisfaction of Engineer-in-charge.

11.0 PAYMENT

11.1 Concrete
Payment for plain cement concrete shall be made on cubic meter basis of the actual finished
work done or as per approved construction drawings, which ever is less and shall be inclusive of
all labour, materials, curing etc. complete. The rates shall be deemed to include complete cost of

taking and testing concrete cubes and carrying out any other tests as per specifications and as
directed by Engineer-in-Charge.

11.2 Contraction joints


The payment shall be made on per running meter basis. This rate shall include making of the
joints, supplying and filling in the mastic filler etc. complete.

11.3 Expansion joints


The payment shall be made on running meter basis. The rate shall include cleaning, filling the
joint with bitumen mix filler, sealing with approved compound, finishing the joint, clearing of
the adjoining surface after sealing of the joints etc. all complete.

11.4 Steps in side slopes of canal


The payment shall be made as per number basis.

11.5 The above payment clauses are not applicable in case of LSTK Jobs
