d e g r e e of s a t u r a t i o n , in s i t u s t r e s s , a n d
stress history. On the other hand, a m o r e c o r ­ rig id o r f le x i b le
rect t e s t i n g p r o c e d u r e c a n b e a p p l i e d w h e n a (sm ooth base)
s a m p l e is i n v e s t i g a t e d in t h e l a b o r a t o r y .

M o s t in s i t u t e s t s w i l l y i e l d r e s u l t s w h i c h a r e
n o t d i r e c t l y r e l a t e d to t h e d e f o r m a t i o n p a r a m e ­
t e r s of t h e s o i l . However, several i n v e s t i g a ­
tors have d e v e l o p e d expedient empirical rela­
t i o n s to d e r i v e t h e e l a s t i c p r o p e r t i e s f r o m t h e
m o s t c o m m o n l y u s e d in s i t u t e s t i n g m e t h o d s a n d
furthermore proved that these methods will have ■
