ABSTRACT

SANDI, LESBRA: IMPROVING STUDENTS’ LISTENING

ACHIEVEMENT USING ANIMATED MOVIE AT
THE SECOND YEAR OF SMP SWASTA
METHODIST II ON NARRATIVE TEXT

This thesis is aimed to find out the effect of animated movie to the students’
listening comprehension on narrative text. The problems of this thesis are: 1. What is
the effect of using animated movie to the listening comprehension at the second year
of SMP SWASTA METHODIST II on narrative text?, 2. What is the effect of
without using animated movie to the listening comprehension at the second year of
SMP SWASTA METHODIST II on narrative text?, 3. Is the effect of using animated
movie more significant than the effect of without using animated movie to the
listening comprehension at the second year of SMP SWASTA METHODIST II on
narrative text?
To answer the problems of this thesis, the writer follows some theories
namely: Nation & Newton (2009), Gerot and Wignell (1994), Field (2008), Wilkie
(2001), Harmer (2007), and Bordwell & Thompson (2008).
The method employed in this thesis is quantitative research. To answer the
problems above, the writer used sample from the second year of SMP SWASTA
METHODIST II. This study aims to find out the effect of animated movie to the
listening comprehension on narrative text. The population of the study was from
grade VIII A and VIII B SMP SWASTA METHODIST II. The sample was 60
students which were divided into two classes; the experimental class that was taught
by using animated movie consisted of 30 students, and the control class that was
taught without using animated movie, 30 students. The instrument for collecting the
data was answering multiple choice questions which consisted of 30 questions.
