Projects Undertaken

1. AERODYNAMIC CLEARANCES OF VARIOUS CONFIGURATIONS OF A COMBAT AIRCRAFT


To identify the effect of change in stores configuration on handling qualities of combat aircraft
CFD simulations are performed for various Mach-Alpha-Beta combinations to estimate aerodynamic coefficients
Flight performance evaluation across the flight envelope and Identification of flight regimes for safe operability
and performance
Aerodynamic clearances for safe flight operations are provided across the flight envelope
2. DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF ENGINE BAY COOLING SYSTEM OF A COMBAT AIRCRAFT
Design of secondary inlets and outlets for Aircraft-Engine bay compartment using CATIA V5
Grid generation and CFD simulations are performed to simulate interaction of Aircraft flow field with Engine
mass flow and exhaust jet
Maximum temperatures attained in the bay and cooling mass flow required to limit the temperatures are
estimated and influence of jet exhaust is analyzed
Improved Engine bay aerodynamic cooling system is designed and integrated into future versions of combat
aircraft
3. DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION OF FUEL DROP TANK OF A COMBAT AIRCRAFT TO IMPROVE
SUPERSONIC PERFORMANCE
Aft-region of combat aircraft is re-designed with geometric constraints through a parametric model using CATIA
V5
Multiple configurations are designed and CFD simulations are performed for transonic and supersonic Mach
numbers
Effect of design modifications on overall aircraft drag is estimated and best configuration is identified based on
best aerodynamic efficiency
Improved aircraft configuration is released and integrated into future versions of combat aircraft
4. CFD INVESTIGATION OF LONGITUDINAL CHARACTERISTICS OF A COMBAT AIRCRAFT
Simulated the aircraft at low subsonic and transonic Mach numbers for various angles of attack
Pitch-up phenomenon and the underlying flow physics mechanisms are studied
Designed wing fences to alleviate the sudden pitch up tendency of aircraft
Studied the LEVCON-ELEVON coupling effect for better Approach speed during landing
Computed Hinge moments in Control Surfaces
5. ESTIMATION AERODYNAMIC LOADS FOR VARIOUS COMBINATIONS OF LCA STORE CONFIGURATIONS
CFD simulations are carried out for several Stores configurations of Light combat aircraft
Pressure distributions along the Wing and Fin surfaces and Aerodynamic force coefficients are estimated for a
large matrix of flight conditions
Effect of control surface deflections, angle of attack and angle of side slip on pressure distribution of the aircraft
are estimated
Generated data has been provided to Airframe group for structural analysis to calculate load factor envelopes
