Chapter 1

1.1 Background of the Study

Tobacco has been used by people for centuries, but cigarette smoking and large scale
cigarette manufacturing appeared only in the 19th century. Cigarette smoking has since
spread worldwide and in 2000 about one in three adults, or about 1.1 to 1.2 billion
people worldwide, smoked. It is estimated that smoking is responsible for four million
deaths in the world each year. The number of smokers is expected to increase to 1.6
billion people by 2025 as a result of growth in adult population and increased tobacco
consumption.

Consumption of tobacco and tobacco products, by smoking in particular, is considered

to impose a net social cost to society. Smoking and tobacco use are increasingly
considered to have acquired the dimensions of an epidemic. According to various
studies, tobacco related deaths will rise dramatically over the next 25 years, unless
current smokers quit smoking.

Tobacco and tobacco products, however, are produced, traded and consumed legally,
as all other products, and their production and trade is subject to the same rules and
regulations as all other products. Thus, although many countries take active measures
to reduce smoking and other tobacco use as a policy for reducing tobacco-related social
costs, economies of other countries have to depend heavily on tobacco growing and
tobacco-related manufacturing for employment and income.
1.2 Statement of the Problem

The fact that smoking is injurious to health is knows to both children and adults and the
fact that smoking can cause lung cancer is also known to all. However, the general
population do not realize that besides lung diseases, smoking is a risk factors for
numerous illnesses. Center for Disease Control and prevention states that besides lung
cancer, smoking causes illnesses such as stroke, coronary heart disease, peripheral
vascular disease, bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, kidney cancer, and stomach
cancer.

1.3 Hypothesis of the Study

Cigarette smoking is a well-established cause of cardiovascular disease. Although

smoking arrest is the best method by which to decrease smoking-induced
cardiovascular disease. Additional research is necessary to determine the mechanisms
by which smoking contributes to cardiovascular disease and methods need to be
investigated by which smoking induced cardiovascular disease can be reduced in those
unwilling to quit smoking. The predominant mechanisms responsible for smoking
induced cardiovascular injury is unclear, however one hypothesis holds that repeated
sympathetic nervous system surges occurring when a cigarette is smoked during
stressful periods may contribute to the deleterious effect of smoking on cardiovascular
health.

Upon smoking a cigarette a number of physiological responses, such as increases in

blood pressure and heart rate, have consistently been observed. This physiological
response to mental stress is similar to that observed in response to smoking (e.g.
increases in blood pressure, heart rate, catecholamine concentrations. When smoking
is combined with exposure to stress, the increases in blood pressure and heart rate are
additive. Exaggerated cardiovascular response to stress has been associated with the
development and progression of coronary artery disease, therefore combining stress
with smoking likely results in greater cardiovascular harm than either smoking or stress
individually. Since smokers often smoke in response to stressful situations,
interventions that decrease the physiological response to mental stress during cigarette
smoking may reduce the negative cardiovascular effects in smokers. Our long-term
objective is to identify interventions that can increase smoking quit rates or decrease the
cardiovascular harm associated with smoking.

1.4 Significance of the Study

It’s important to stop this kind of diseases, nowadays even kids and teens have been
addicted to smoking. We and the government should take action on this problem. Kids
and teens should know the effect of smoking, Cigarette smoking causes most cases of
lung cancer which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

1.6 Scope & Delimitations of the Study

Close to 1.3 billion people currently smoke cigarettes, setting aside all the nonsense
they hear about how many chemicals are in them. None of the much flaunted appeals of
cigarette advertisers, such as superior taste and mildness, induces us to become
smokers or to choose one brand in preference to another. Despite the emphasis put on
such qualities by advertisers, they are only minor considerations. Smoking is as much a
psychological pleasure as it is a physiological satisfaction. It really isn't the taste that
counts. It's that sense of satisfaction one gets from a cigarette that they cannot get from
anything else.

1.7 Definition of Terms

Smoking - Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is
highly addictive. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become
so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal.

2.1-2.4 Summary

Summary:

Chemicals in cigarette smoke are leading cause of death to both smokers and
nonsmokers. Plant is the potential source to produce medicine for almost all the
diseases. Mangroves are promising as a novel source of anti-cancer drugs in regulating
the cancer pathways and stimulating immunity in the body system. Research on
medicine from mangroves for the treatment of cancer has not only been shown to have
an effect on cancer, but also provided important methods for the study of cancer
therapy and mechanism.

It is matter of necessity to develop potent drugs to treat smoking related diseases. It is a

matter of urgency to consider effective way for prevention of smoke-related cancers. In
this regard, plant bioactive compounds are important in the treatment of cancers.
Natural products comprise of 14 out of the top 35 drugs on worldwide sales. There are
more than 270 000 higher plants existing on this planet including mangroves but only a
small portion has been explored scientifically. So, it is anticipated that plants can
provide potential bioactive compounds for the development of new “leads” to combat
cancer diseases. Finding remedy from natural sources is the only effective way to
reduce the cancer diseases. In this regard, mangroves are promising as a source of
medicines. Further research is warranted to develop potent drugs from the mangroves
for smoking-related diseases in the following lines.

Broad based screening of mangrove species extracted in different solvents of various

polarities against carcinogenesis; isolation, purification and identification of anti-cancer
chemicals present in the potent extract; physical, chemical and biological
characterizations of the bioactive compounds; formulation of mangrove-based drugs
and testing their efficacy with standard drugs under in vitro and in vivo conditions; cost-
benefits analysis for developing commercial ventures.

3.1 Research Design

The subjects of the study are, the students of SPC Southern

Philippines College, school year 2018 – 2019. They were from all levels of one hundred
twenty (150) students.

Every individual have given the chance of being included in the sample.

3.2 Research Locale

We conducted our research at Southern Philippines College since we are from SPC and
the respondents are the students of SPC.

3.3 Instrumentation

The materials we used are papers for the survey and we observe students how they
smoke cigarettes. We also use our knowledge and skills to do the research

4.1 Results and Discussions

Based on what we have discover, a lot of students at Southern Philippines De Oro

College know the sequences and effects of smoking, some said yes that they smoke
because of stress, some because of their curiosity, some said yes they smoke because
of the influence of friends, some smoke because it’s their habit since.

4.2 Analysis

From our opinion people smoke because of stress, being depress, because they are
sad, they smoke because they are lonely and some smoke because of influence and
curiosity. Some because it’s their habit since, even if they know the consequences of
smoking they are still doing it even class time.
4.3 Interpretation and Data

128 people agreed that smoking can affect us

12 people says No that it can’t affect us

10 said maybe it can affect us

85.3% agreed smoking have effect to us humans

8% says No it can’t affect students who smoke

6.67% says that maybe it can affect us

As we have observe the data, mostly people knows that smoking can affect us specially
us students. There are many diseases we can encounter by smoking. Smoking causes
more deaths each year, it is one of the reason why Filipinos people die. Smokers are
more likely than nonsmokers to develop heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer. As a
researcher our point here is that people should know their limit smoking, it can affect
their heart and blood vessels. By smoking it can cause stroke and coronary heart
diseases. It damage the blood vessels and can make them thicken. People and
STUDENTS should know the diseases they can call by smoking, they should know the
diseases that can lead them to death or suffering.

Summary of Finding, Conclusions and Recommendations

5.1 Summary of Finding

Now we know the reason why students have been smoking including kids and teens,
the effects of smoking is severe and may cause to death for we know that smoking is
one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the Philippines. It also causes cancer
in many other parts of the body, including the mouth, throat, voice box (larynx),
esophagus (the tube between your mouth and stomach), bladder, bowel, cervix, kidney,
liver, stomach and pancreas. Smoking damages your heart and your blood circulation,
increasing your risk of developing conditions such as coronary heart disease, heart
attack, stroke, peripheral vascular disease (damaged blood vessels), cerebrovascular
disease (damaged arteries that supply blood to your brain). Smoking also damages
your lungs, leading to conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
(COPD), which incorporates bronchitis and emphysema, pneumonia. Smoking can also
worsen or prolong the symptoms of respiratory conditions such as asthma, or
respiratory tract infections such as the common cold. In men, smoking can cause
impotence because it limits the blood supply to the penis. It can also reduce the fertility
of both men and women.

5.2 Conclusions

Both men and women who smoke can lead themselves to death and can suffer to
diseases. Government should start action now to lessen deaths caused by smoking by
implementing organizations and establishment about the effects of smoking.

5.3 Recommendations of the Study

The problem of youths nowadays is that they abuse their health without even knowing
the sequences of smoking. Government should start organizations for the youths who
use smoke to prevent sufferings and deaths.

Introduction

Like most people, you already know that smoking is bad for your health. But do you
really understand just how dangerous smoking really is? Tobacco contains nicotine, a
highly addictive drug that makes it difficult for smokers to kick the habit. Tobacco
products also contain many poisonous and harmful substances that cause disease and
premature death. Did you know that out of a group of 1000 smokers (age 10-30), that a
full quarter of them (250!) will die of smoking-related illnesses prior to completing middle
age, an additional quarter will die prematurely from smoking-related illnesses shortly
after retirement age, and another large group will develop debilitating chronic illnesses
as a result of their smoking? Most people don't know the odds of getting sick as a result
of smoking are really that bad, but when you do the numbers, that is how they come
out. For many people, truly understanding the very real dangers associated with
smoking becomes the motivating factor that helps them to quit.

Although it can be a very difficult habit to break, smoking is ultimately a choice; it is your
responsibility to choose whether or not you will continue to smoke. This article provides
a brief synopsis of the risks associated with smoking; an overview of nicotine addiction,
including why it is so difficult to give up smoking; and an outline of the advantages and
disadvantages of quiting. Once you have decided to quit, you will benefit from the
information in this article about the physiological, psychological, and behavioral aspects
of nicotine addiction; the different methods available to help you quit; and the steps you
can take to make the process easier. Learning about and understanding the many
facets of the smoking habit can put you on the right track to successful smoking
cessation.
