Problem Sheet_Module-1

1. An incomplete frequency distribution given below has total frequency 230 and median is 46.
Determine the missing frequencies f1 and f2.
Class 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70 70-80
Frequency 12 30 f1 65 f2 25 18
2. The mean and S.D. based on 60 observations were calculated as 276 mm and 22 mm
respectively. But on subsequent scrutiny it was found that through oversight one
observation was recorded wrongly at 327 mm through its correct value was 372 mm. Find
the corrected values of the mean and S.D.
3. Goals scored by teams A and B in a football season were as follows:
No. of goals scored in a No. of matches
match A B
0 27 17
1 9 9
2 8 6
3 5 5
4 4 3
Which team may be considered more consistent?

4. Calculate the three quartiles of the following frequency distribution of marks (out of 50)
obtained by 50 students in a class.
Marks 7.5 12.5 17.5 22.5 27.5 32.5 37.5 42.5
No. of 5 6 15 10 5 4 3 2
Students
5. Find the missing values x2 , n2 and  3 from the following data:
Description Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Combined
Group
Number 50 n2 90 200
Mean 113 x2 115 116
S.D 6 7 3 7.746
6. Compute the quartile deviation for the following
Class 5 15 25 35 45 55 65 75
mark
Frequency 3 7 9 23 15 8 6 4
7. A standard cell whose voltage is known to be 1.20 volts was used to test the accuracy of two
voltmeters A and B. 10 independent readings of the voltage of the cell were taken with two
voltmeters and the results were as under:
Metre 1.21 1.25 1.24 1.20 1.19 1.21 1.22 1.25 1.23 1.24
A
Metre 1.22 1.16 1.12 1.18 1.21 1.15 1.16 1.13 1.15 1.18
B
Which of the two voltmeters is more reliable, assuming that the mean for both the metres
as 1.20?
8. The sum and sum of squares corresponding to length X (in cm) and weight Y (in gm) of 50
tapioca tubers are given as ∑X=212, ∑X2=902.8, ∑Y=261, ∑Y2=1457.6. Which is more varying,
the length or weight?
9. Find the coefficient of variation of a series for which the following results are given: N=50,
∑X’=25, ∑X2=500 where X’-deviation from the assumed average 5.
10. For a frequency distribution of marks in statistics of 100 candidates the mean and standard
deviation were found to be 45 and 20. Later it was discovered that the score 54 was misread
as 64 in obtaining frequency distribution. Find the correct mean and standard deviation of
the frequency distribution.
11. The mean of the five numbers 6, 9, 2, x, y is 5 and the standard deviation is √6. Find x and y.
