CHAPTER 1

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction/Rationale

Ramey (2013) mentioned that technology is pure form of thought created to form

easier actions. Through technology it can help people accomplish task easier like

communication and transportation and with technology it helps people extend capabilities

making everyday life easier.

Raj (2018) stated that technology has been growing and growing. Numerous

achievements of technology help everyone enjoy and be at peace will their life. It helped

improved fields such as work, medicine, business, industries and especially education.

One of the helpful products of technology in education are technological devices

like phones, laptops and computers according to lolong (2013). He said that technological

devices are crucial to the people especially to the students but how do these technological

devices affect the student in their learning capabilities.

Roberts (2017) said that technological devices such as phones and computers

contributes bad effects like increase obesity risk that can cause chronic health conditions,

including heart disease, diabetes and arthritis, aggression, sleep problems, and potential

health problems that will disrupt their learning capabilities.

Another research conducted by Krishnan, Zakaria, Khalil, and Jofree (2017) say’s

that technological devices can cause eye deficiency. It can also produce radiation that may

Cause the user to be at risk of electric shocks that may contribute of to the laziness of the

user and contribute to their health problems.

Lee (2015) in her study revealed that using technological devices can promote

listening ability, speeches, help innovative thinking and creativity, develops hand and eye

coordination and can help develop mathematical and engineering skills, and it can help

them motivated in learning.

Naughton (2012) mentioned in his study that technology is a double sided edge

sword it can be used to create and it can be used to destroy.

Raj (2018) specified that it is a two sided world many stated the good and bad

effects of technological devices may affect the student learning performance as seen on

media and newspapers. There are many possible effects on using technological devices. It

is very important to know what are their advantages and disadvantages rather than

searching in the web.

Some concern exists about the distraction caused by the use of mobile devices.

Students are not paying attention to the teacher in class with the possible causes are

spending time messaging, surfing in the internet or chatting online with their friends.

(Tindell & Bohlander, 2012).

Most students are consuming with a great amount of energy on cellphones, they are also

being distracted by other contents like pop emails, advertisement and games on their

computers or on the internet, and they often use the internet to get the answer instead of

thinking. Babatunde et al. (2018).

The use of technological devices in the classroom can have serious negative

consequences on students learning, teaching, and classroom management. The negative

influence of using technological devices in classroom has also have side effects on their

learning performance; technological device use is negatively associated with student

learning and to the fellow students it poses a distraction. Gounder S. (2014)

In review, of all above ongoing discussion, this study will be done to assess the

perceived effects of technological devices to the learning performance of Senior High

School students to continue help monitor what is the effects of such technological devices

to their learning performance.

Statement of the problem

This study attempts to document the perceived effects of technological devices to

the learning performance of Grade 12 students of Saint Mary’s University.

1. What is the extent effect of technological devices to the learning performance of the

students?

2. What are the benefits of the students in their learning when using technological

devices?

In the figure above is the process that the researcher is following, The profile of the

student, which includes their sex and the academic stand, will be the input and the

questionnaire and descriptive survey will be the tool on which is helping the researchers

interpret their result for getting the output of this study that is to Dissemination of results

as a basis for the school administration and students to improve educational policies and

the academic behavior of the students.

Significance of the study

The study is beneficial to the following:

Teachers- It is beneficial for teachers to learn the benefits of Technological Devices to the

students for their teaching purposes.

The students- These study is helpful for the students to learn the benefits of Technological

Devices to their physical and to their mental effects.

The future researches- this study is going to serve as their guide on how beneficial is

Technological devices to the learning of students.

Scope and delimitation

Due to time and financial constraints, this study had recognizes many limitations

not only in terms of its scope and focus but also in its statistical tools and time frame. The

main focus of this investigation was to determine the benefits on the students if they will

use technological devices. The aspects that was looked into were the strands of students,

their methods and strategies in learning and what Technological devices are usually used.

The connection availability, connection, age, and status were not connected to this research

because of the limited time given to the researchers.

Definition of Terms

Listed below are the terms taken from the research that the researchers defined. This

definitions is necessary for future researchers for better understanding.

Effect –a change that results when something is done or happens

Learning Performance is an idea in behaviorism that stresses the distinction among the
learning of a behavior and real overall performance of the behavior.

Networks refers to the communication layer that enables the entity to communicate with

another device, and sometimes enables devices to communicate with each other.

Technological Devices refers to the tools and devices that are connected via cellular data

used to entertain and help the finish the projects and assignments.
