1 Introduction
This Installation Guide describes the procedures for installation and configuration of
EDIC hardware and software. EDIC Software consists of hardware drivers and
configuration tools to install your EDIC interface hardware on your computer.

The software for installation and configuration of EDIC hardware interfaces


generally is part of an application software that supports EDIC hardware
interfaces.
EDIC hardware drivers are installed during the installation of your application
software. Please connect your EDIC hardware after installation of the software
to your computer. Please install your application before installing the EDIC interface
hardware.
Have a look at the manual of your application software if there are special instruction
for EDIC hardware installation.

This Guide will lead you through the installation and configuration process describing
the following steps in detail:

2 Requirements
2.1 General System Requirements
EDIC hardware and software is designed for use on PC systems with operating systems
• Windows XP Service Pack 3 32 Bit (additionally the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is required)
• Windows 7 (32 Bit or 64 Bit)

Your PC system should meet the following minimum hardware requirements:


• Pentium processor 400MHz or faster
• At least 64 megabytes physical RAM
• At least 25 megabytes free disk space

2.2 Background Knowledge


The following background knowledge is required for users of this manual:
• PC software and hardware installation on the Windows operating system being used

2.3 Hardware Requirements


EDIC software can only be used with an installed EDIC hardware unit. For all supported
operating systems the requirements for EDIC hardware and the PC system are
described in the following chapters.

Please note, EDICcard, EDICcardC, EDIC-PC3 and EDICnet interfaces are no


longer supported for new software releases, since the production of these
interfaces has been terminated.

The PC hardware requirements for specific EDIC interfaces are listed in the table below:

3 Software installation
3.1 Preparations
Hardware installation
Please do not connect EDIC hardware devices EDICcard2, EDICpci, EDICblue,
EDICusb and EDICwlan before you have installed the application software.
Most EDIC hardware devices are recognized by Plug & Play operating systems
automatically. Follow the instructions of the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard..
If you connect your EDIC hardware before the Setup was executed, cancel the
Windows Found New Hardware Wizard, disconnect your hardware and run the Setup of
your application software program first.

Switch off your PC completely before installing PCI cards in your computer. Pull
the plug out of the power socket!

Software installation
Some Softing products delivered on CD/DVD will automatically start an installation
menu if the Autorun feature on your PC is activated. The picture below shows an
example. If Autorun is disabled you may launch the installation menu by executing
start.exe on your installation disk.

3.2 Application Software Setup
This chapter demonstrates the typical installation process of an application software that
installs EDIC driver and configuration software in its course. Here the D-PDU API
software is used as an example.

For Windows XP and Windows 7 systems make sure that you have
administrative rights before starting the setup.
To cancel a setup procedure please press the [Cancel] button in the current
dialog.

Please execute the following steps for installation:

Step 1: Acknowledge the “Welcome” window of the installation program and click [Next >].
This step may be skipped automatically in within automatic installations.

Step 2: Select a directory, where the application software shall be installed. If the selected directory
does not exist, the directory is automatically created. Proceed by clicking [Next >].
This step may be skipped automatically in installations with preconfigured directories.

Step 3: If you want to change the Default Program Group, enter a new name which shall be used for
the EDIC software and click
[Next >].
This step may be skipped automatically in installations with preconfigured directories.

Step 4: By clicking [Install] the software will be copied to the destination directory and installed to the
system.

On Windows 7 you may get a notification from your operating system to allow driver
software to be installed. Click Install to install the drivers. You may checkmark
“Always trust Softing AG” to omit this notification in future versions.

Step 5: After completion please press the [Finish] button.

You may click Finish and launch EDIC Configuration Manager to install your EDIC
interface hardware immediately after setup has finished.

If a system reboot is required due to driver installation, a message box will


appear for notification. In these cases please follow the instructions.

3.3 Uninstall and Repair
To uninstall or repair the software open Add/Remove Programs in Windows XP and
Programs in Windows 7 in the Control Panel. In Windows 7 select Uninstall a program.
Select the entry for the program and select Uninstall or Repair.
Please make sure that all applications using EDIC software components are closed
before you perform an uninstall. Files that have been changed or added after installation
are not removed by the uninstall procedure. Delete remaining files and directories
manually if you do not want to keep them for any purpose.

4 Hardware Installation
For all EDIC interfaces a electronic user manual in PDF format is part of the delivery.
This manual describes all hardware functionality, specifications and also covers the
hardware installation procedure (i.e. physical integration into the PC system). For details
concerning these issues please see the user manual of the specific EDIC interface.
The following chapters describe how to install your EDIC hardware on your computer.

4.1 Generic instructions for all Bluetooth-connected interfaces


Depending on the third-party Bluetooth hardware support of your target computer, it is
required to disable energy saving settings in the properties of the installed Bluetooth-
Hardware.
This setting can be found in the Windows Device Manager in the section “Bluetooth
Radios” and can be named either “Generic Bluetooth Radio” or bear the name of a
specific Bluetooth hardware. However, the desired setting is not included inside the
“Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator”. Please see the screenshots below for two
possibilities, marked with yellow background.

Right-click the selected Bluetooth hardware and select “Properties”. In the Tab “Power
Options” make sure, that the first check-box is disabled (see screenshot below).

4.2 Installation of Plug & Play EDIC Interfaces


Plug & Play Interfaces are automatically recognized by Operating Systems that support
Plug & Play.
Interfaces that support Plug & Play are
• EDICcard2
• EDICpci
• EDICusb
• EDICblue when connected via USB

• EDICwlan when connected via USB
• VAS5054A when connected via USB
• VAS5055

Please connect these interfaces to your PC after you have installed your application
software.
When your application software has been installed and a new EDIC with Plug & Play
capabilities is connected to the system, the Found New Hardware Wizard will pop up on
Windows XP systems – for Windows 7 systems, please see below. Follow these
instructions for Windows XP:

Select No, not this time and continue with Next.

Select Install the software automatically. You do not need to insert your installation
disk as all necessary components were already installed during setup. Click Next to
continue.

Click Finish to complete installation.

On Windows 7 the drivers are silently installed without wizard and the following
notification will be displayed in the system tray area.

Please wait until Windows tells you that the device driver software was successfully
installed.

4.3 Add or remove an EDIC interface and change the device settings
To add or remove EDIC interfaces connected via Bluetooth or WLAN, or to change
EDIC interface settings, use the EDIC Configuration Manager tool from the application's
program group in the Windows Start Menu. The currently installed EDIC devices are
displayed in the following dialog:

The EDIC Configuration Manager shows all EDIC interfaces configured on your system.
Click on the small [+] sign in front of the EDIC entry to show the available
communication connections for the interface.

Possible Communication Connections types are:


USB used by EDIC interfaces that are connected via USB (e.g.
EDICusb, EDICblue, EDICwlan)
Bluetooth used by EDIC interfaces that are connected via Bluetooth (e.g.
EDICblue, EDICusb with Bluetooth option)
Network / IP used by EDIC interfaces that are connected via WLAN (EDICwlan)
PCMCIA used by EDIC interfaces that have to be inserted in a slot of a
PCMCIA adapter (EDICcard2)
PCI used by EDIC interfaces that have to be inserted in a PCI card slot
(EDICpci)

A communication connection can have one of the following states:


active connection The EDIC interface is currently connected.
not configured The connection is not yet configured.
not connected The EDIC interface is currently not connected.
preselected connection The connection is configured but currently not active.

Press the Add button to add an additional EDIC communication connection to the
installation.

Press the Settings button to check and change settings for the selected EDIC interface
or communication connection...

To remove an EDIC interface or a communication connection from the installation first
select the interface or connection (eg. Bluetooth) to be removed and then press the
Remove button. Non Plug and Play interfaces and communication connections (e.g.
EDICwlan) will be removed from the list immediately. Plug and play interfaces (e.g.
EDICcard2, EDICpci) are detected automatically and are not removed if they are still
connected.

Use the Refresh button to update the state of the display after connecting new
interfaces or after changing settings.

4.4 Installation of EDICcard2 Interfaces


EDICcard2 is a Plug & Play device. For Windows XP and Windows 7 just insert the
EDICcard2 and follow the instructions of the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard
(see chapter 4.1 for details).
When you click the Settings button, the hardware resources assigned by the operating
system are shown.

4.5 Installation of EDICpci Interfaces


EDICpci has full Plug & Play capabilities. Just insert the EDICpci after installation of
your application software and follow the instructions of Windows Found New Hardware
Wizard (see chapter 4.1 for details)..
When you click the Settings button, the hardware resources assigned by the operating
system are shown.

4.6 Installation of EDICblue Interfaces


EDICblue supports USB or Bluetooth connections.

If your EDICblue is connected to your computer using USB the Bluetooth


Radio of your EDICblue is automatically disabled. In this case your
Bluetooth software will not be able to find it.

Connecting EDICblue via USB


Please install the application software before connecting an EDICblue to your computer.

The EDICblue is not powered over the USB cable from your computer!
You have to connect it to the vehicle power supply in order to get it
power-supplied.

Connect your EDICblue to the computer using the enclosed USB cable. As EDICblue
connected via USB offers Plug & Play services Windows will automatically recognize the
new hardware.
On Windows XP the Found New Hardware Wizard is started. Follow the instructions as
described in chapter 4.1.

On Windows 7 the drivers are installed automatically without any user interaction.

Changing the configuration of the EDICblue

Start the EDIC Configuration Manager.

Select your EDICblue from the list of interfaces and click the Settings button to display
the current configuration.
The settings of EDICblue can be changed via USB or Bluetooth.
Changing the settings via Bluetooth is only possible if your EDICblue is
not connected via USB and a working serial Bluetooth link between PC
and EDICblue has been set up previously.
If your EDICblue requires a Bluetooth Passkey that you do not know, a
connection via Bluetooth cannot be established. You have to do the
configuration via USB cable.

The Device Settings Tab offers the following options.


The EDICblue has a the built-in buzzer that may give an alarm after a preset time when
the connection to the host computer is lost. This may be useful to avoid forgetting to
disconnect the device from a vehicle after use.
Mark the Enable Buzzer checkbox to activate the buzzer to give an alarm after the time
entered in the Buzzer Time field. The range is from 15 seconds to 65535 seconds. The
timer starts to run when the physical connection to the host computer is lost, i.e. the
USB cable is unplugged or the Bluetooth connection is interrupted. The buzzer alarm
will continue until the device is unplugged or when the device is automatically turned off
by the Power Off option. By default the buzzer is disabled.

The Power Off option automatically powers off the device after a certain time to avoid
discharging the battery.
Enable Power Off by marking the checkbox and set the Power Off Time to a value that
is greater than the Buzzer Time. After the device has automatically been powered-off
you have to remove the device and plug it in again. Ignition state change from off to on
will also power up the EDICblue again. The range for Power Off Time is 15 seconds to
65535 seconds. By default automatic Power Off is disabled.

The Bluetooth Settings Tab offers the following options:


This tab allows to change Passkey and Bluetooth device name. To change the Passkey
enter up to 16 characters. To change the Bluetooth Name of your EDICblue enter up to
17 characters. The serial number in angle brackets is appended automatically to the
Bluetooth Name and cannot be changed. The Passkey is set to 0000 by default.
EDICblue supports four Bluetooth security modes. To configure Bluetooth security
select one of the listed Security Modes:
Mode 1: no security, no encryption, the device will never ask for authentication or
pairing, a PIN is not required
Mode 2: Security level is determined by the service, EDICblue always asks for
authentication, Passkey is required, no encryption. This is the default value.
Mode 3: EDICblue always asks for authentication, Passkey required, no encryption
Mode 4: Mode 3 with link level encryption added

Click Finish to save your settings, Cancel to abort all changes or Reset to restore the
default settings.

Connecting EDICblue via Bluetooth

Before configuring EDICblue for Bluetooth connection, please make sure


that you have followed the Generic instructions for all Bluetooth-
connected interfaces (see section 4.1 on page 11).

Start the EDIC Configuration Manager. Make sure, that you have activated your
Bluetooth hard- and software on your computer. The EDICblue has to be powered and
to be within range.

Click the Add button:

Confirm the preconditions to continue. EDIC Configuration Manager is scanning for


Bluetooth devices. After the scan is completed the found Bluetooth devices are
displayed.

If your EDICblue device is not listed, it is advisable to start another scan by pressing the
Rescan button. Make sure your EDICblue device is in range und powered. Select the
device you want to add and press Next >.

If your EDICblue was already connected before by the Bluetooth
software of your computer or has been added previously in the EDIC
Configuration Manager it will not be shown in this dialog. The dialog
only shows new devices.

If your EDICblue device is not found by the scan process you may manually define the
COM port associated to your EDICblue by clicking Enter COM Port. Select the COM
port from the list or type in the correct COM port if it is not listed.

Please enter the Passkey for the EDICblue device. The default Passkey for most
devices is 0000. If you do not remember the Passkey, you can check and change it in
the “Settings” dialog of the EDIC Configuration Manager when connected via USB.
Click Next > to complete the installation.
The EDIC Configuration Manager installs the Bluetooth connection and connects to the
EDICblue device.
Windows will notify you when the device driver has been installed successfully.

Bluetooth offers only a limited bandwidth. Bandwidth is reduced further


with increasing distance or interference from other Bluetooth and WLAN
devices nearby.
For high performance requirements use EDICblue via USB.

4.7 Installation of EDICusb Interfaces
EDICusb is a interface that is connected by a USB cable to the host computer. There
are also EDICusb devices available that have a Bluetooth option built-in.
Please install the application software before connecting an EDICusb to your computer.

The EDICusb is not powered over the USB cable from your computer!
You have to connect it to the vehicle power supply in order to get it
power-supplied.

EDICusb without Bluetooth option


Connect your EDICusb to the computer using the enclosed USB cable. As EDICusb
offers Plug & Play services Windows will automatically recognize the new hardware.
On Windows XP the Found New Hardware Wizard is started. Follow the instructions as
described in chapter 4.1.

Changing the configuration of the EDICusb


Start the EDIC Configuration Manager.

Select your EDICusb from the list of interfaces and click the Settings button to display
the current configuration.

The configuration settings are split in two tabs.


Bluetooth Bluetooth settings (these settings are only available if the
device has a built-in Bluetooth module)
Device EDICusb device settings

The Device Settings Tab offers the following options.


The EDICusb has a the built-in buzzer that may give an alarm after a preset time when

EDICusb with Bluetooth option

Before configuring EDICusb for Bluetooth connection, please make sure


that you have followed the Generic instructions for all Bluetooth-
connected interfaces (see section 4.1 on page 11).

For devices with a built-in Bluetooth module the settings in the Bluetooth tab are
activated.

The settings of EDICusb with Bluetooth option can be changed via USB
or Bluetooth. Changing the settings via Bluetooth is only possible if your
EDICusb is not connected via USB and a working serial Bluetooth link
between PC and EDICusb has been set up previously.
If your EDICusb requires a Bluetooth Passkey that you do not know, a
connection via Bluetooth cannot be established. You have to do the
configuration via USB cable.

The Bluetooth Settings Tab offers the following options:

enter up to 16 characters. To change the Bluetooth Name of your EDICusb enter up to

Connecting EDICusb via Bluetooth

Before configuring EDICusb for Bluetooth connection, please make sure


that you have followed the Generic instructions for all Bluetooth-
connected interfaces (see section 4.1 on page 11).

Start the EDIC Configuration Manager. Make sure, that you have activated your
Bluetooth hard- and software on your computer The EDICusb has to be powered and to
be within range.

Click the Add button:

Confirm the preconditions to go on. EDIC Configuration Manager is scanning for


Bluetooth devices. After the scan is completed the found Bluetooth devices are
displayed.

If your EDICusb device is not listed you may start another scan by pressing the Rescan
button. Make sure your EDICusb device is in range und powered. Select the device you
want to add and press Next >.

If your EDICusb is already connected in the Bluetooth software of your


computer or has been added previously in the EDIC Configuration
Manager it will not be shown in this dialog. The dialog only shows new
devices.

If your EDICusb device is not found by the scan process you may enter the COM port
associated to your EDICusb manually by clicking Enter COM Port. Select the COM port
from the list or type in the correct COM port if it is not listed.

Please enter the Bluetooth Passkey for the EDICusb device. The default Passkey for
most devices is 0000. If you do not remember the Passkey, you can check and change
it in the “Settings” dialog of the EDIC Configuration Manager when connected via USB.
Click Next > to complete the installation.
The EDIC Configuration Manager installs the Bluetooth connection and connects to the
EDICusb device.
Windows will notify you when the device driver has been installed successfully.

Bluetooth offers only a limited bandwidth. Bandwidth is reduced further


with increasing distance or interference from other Bluetooth and WLAN
devices nearby.
For high performance requirements use EDICusb via USB.

4.8 Installation of EDICwlan Interfaces
EDICwlan may be connected to your system using Wireless LAN according to the IEEE
standard 802.11b/g or by using a wired link via USB V2.0 Full Speed (12 Mbit/s).

To install, please follow these steps which are described in detail further below:
1. Connect the EDICwlan to the vehicle
2. Install an application software packet, that supports EDICwlan
3. Install the EDICwlan for use with an USB connection
4. Configure EDICwlan for wireless operation
5. Setup a connection by using the WLAN adapter management of Windows

Connect the EDICwlan to the vehicle


The EDICwlan needs to get power-supplied by the vehicle or another power source in
order to be recognized via USB by your PC. Make sure the green LED on the upper side
of the EDICwlan is on continuously.
Please have a look at the EDICwlan user manual to get further
information what cable types are available and how connect the cables
mechanically to the EDICwlan.

Install an application software packet, that supports EDICwlan


Please install the application software before connecting the USB cable of your
EDICwlan to your computer. After installation the drivers and configuration tools for
EDICwlan are prepared for connecting the interface to your system.

Install the EDICwlan for use with an USB connection


Connect the enclosed USB cable to the EDICwlan and the other end to a free USB port
of your computer. As mentioned above, the EDICwlan is not powered by the USB port. It
has to be connected to an external power source.
When the EDICwlan is connected via USB it offers Plug & Play services. Windows will
automatically recognize the new hardware.
On Windows XP systems there will be a notification on the system tray and the Found
New Hardware Wizard will start automatically. Follow the instructions as described in
chapter 4.1.

After completing the Found New Hardware Wizard you will be notified about the
successful installation.

On Windows 7 systems the driver software installation will be started automatically after
Windows recognized that a new device was connected to the computer. There is no
Found New Hardware wizard.

After the driver software installation is completed you will get a message in the
notification area of your computer.

After the driver installation is completed the USB connection to the EDICwlan is ready to
use. Your diagnosis application may start communication with a vehicle using the USB
link. This link to your computer is indicated by the yellow LED that is on continuously.

Configure EDICwlan for wireless Ad-hoc mode operation


The following steps describe how to set up a wireless Peer-to-Peer connection between
your computer and an EDICwlan using Ad-hoc Mode wireless network configuration.
To configure the network settings of your WLAN card administrator privileges are
necessary.

To set up the connection these three main steps are required:


1. Setup of the EDICwlan
2. Setup of the host computer
3. Install the EDICwlan for wireless operation

Setup of the EDICwlan


Connect your EDICwlan to a USB port of your computer and start the EDIC
Configuration Manager.

From the list of devices, select your EDICwlan and click the Settings button.

The current configuration of your EDICwlan will be displayed.


Click Change Configuration to alter the settings. A wizard will show asking you for all
necessary settings.

In this dialog please enter the network name (SSID) of your Wireless Network. Choose
the type of network you want to use: Ad-hoc is a straight connection between the
wireless network card of your computer and the EDICwlan. By choosing Infrastructure
you may join an existing wireless network built by one or more Wireless Access Points.
In this example we will choose an Ad-hoc connection.

Click Next> to continue to the Radio Channel and IP settings dialog.

The next dialog allows you to enter the Ad-hoc radio channel used by the EDICwlan if it
sets up it’s own IP network. If it joins the network of your PC it will automatically change
to the channel used by the WLAN network card of your computer.
Unless you expect a lot of interference on this channel you should leave the channel
setting unchanged. If you want to change the channel it is recommended to choose
channel 1 or 6.

Please enter the IP-Address of the EDICwlan in the field device IP address. Choose the
appropriate subnet mask from the list. Usually you do not need a Standard Gateway
entry for Ad-hoc networks. Leave the value unchanged.

Click Next> to continue to the WLAN security dialog.

For Ad-hoc networks the following security levels are available:


None no encryption
WEP 64 / Open 64 bit WEP Encryption with no authentication
WEP 64 / Shared 64 bit WEP Encryption with shared key authentication
WEP 128 / Open 128bit WEP Encryption with no authentication
WEP 128 / Shared 128bit WEP Encryption with shared key authentication

It is recommended to choose WEP128 / Open in order to get the best possible security
level for your WLAN connection.
For WEP encryption you have to enter an encryption key. You may enter this key as
pass phrase or as hex key.
Usually you want to use the Pass Phrase option. If you want to enter an encryption key
that contains non-printable characters, use Hex Key to enter the characters in
hexadecimal format.
For WEP 64 (Open or Shared) enter 5 character as Pass Phrase, respectively 10 hex
digits. For WEP 128 (Open or Shared) enter 13 characters, respectively 26 hex digits.
You may activate Hide Characters in order to enter the characters masked.
For security reasons the encryption key will not be shown the next time you run the
Wizard. To leave the settings unchanged just make no changes in this dialog.
Click Finish to complete the configuration.
Close the EDIC Configuration Manager.

Setup of the host computer


In this example the network adapter is configured by Windows.

Remove the USB cable from the EDICwlan.

If your EDICwlan is connected to your computer using USB the WLAN
Radio of your EDICwlan is automatically disabled. In this case your
WLAN software will not be able to discover and connect to it.

Setting the IP-address of your Wireless Network Adapter


On Windows XP, open the Control Panel and double-click Network Connections. Right-
click your Wireless Network Adapter and choose Properties from the context menu.
From the list select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
On Windows 7, open the Control Panel and double-click Network and Internet. Double-
click Network and Sharing Center. On the left side select Change Adapter Settings.
Right-click on your Wireless Network Adapter and select Properties from the context
menu.
From the list select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.

Select Use the following IP address to configure a static IP address. Enter your IP-
address and the subnet mask. The subnet mask must be the same as configured in the
EDICwlan. The IP-address must not be the same as the one of the EDICwlan or any
other device on your Wireless LAN working on the same SSID.
Accept the changes by clicking OK. Click OK in the Properties dialog of your wireless
network adapter.

Go back to the list of Network Connections. Double-Click on the Connection of your


WLAN Adapter. A list of available Wireless Networks is opening.
Choose the Wireless Network SSID from your EDICwlan and click the Connect button.

When the network is encrypted Windows will prompt you to enter the security key. Enter
the one you have configured in the EDICwlan. You may enter the Pass Phrase or hex
key.

Wait until Windows tells you that you are connected.

Install the EDICwlan for wireless operation


Start the EDIC Configuration Manager again and select the EDICwlan entry.
Make sure
• the EDICwlan is not connected via USB.
• the EDICwlan is powered

• the wireless connection to the EDICwlan is established

Click the Add button.


Confirm the following notification.

Enter the IP-Address from your VCI.

Configure EDICwlan for use in an existing WLAN infrastructure


The following steps describe how to set up an EDICwlan to join an existing WLAN
infrastructure network with WPA2 encryption.
The following steps require that your PC is already connected to the Wireless
Infrastructure Network or directly to the distribution LAN.

There are three main steps to set up the connection:


1. Setup of the EDICwlan
2. Install the EDICwlan for wireless operation

Setup of the EDICwlan


To set up your EDICwlan for a Wireless LAN connection in a infrastructure wireless
network connect your EDICwlan to a USB port of your computer and start the EDIC
Configuration Manager.
From the list of devices, select the entry of your EDICwlan and click the Settings button.
The current configuration of your EDICwlan will be shown.
Click Change Configuration to alter the settings. A wizard will show asking you for all
necessary settings.

In this dialog please enter the network name (SSID) of your Wireless Infrastructure
Network. Choose Infrastructure as network type.

Click Next> to continue.


In the next dialog you have to decide if you want to assign a static IP address (DHCP
off) or use DHCP to automatically let a server configure the IP settings of EDICwlan.
If you want to use a static IP configuration enter the IP-address, subnet mask and
optionally a gateway, if the EDICwlan should be accessible from outside of your subnet.
Usually in existing Wireless networks IP addresses are assigned by DHCP. Enter a
DHCP name in the field provided when you have selected to use DHCP.

Click Next> to continue to the WLAN security dialog.

From the Security Level list select the appropriate encryption – authentication method.
For Infrastructure networks the following security levels are available:
None no encryption
WEP 64 / Open 64 bit WEP Encryption with no authentication
WEP 64 / Shared 64 bit WEP Encryption with shared key authentication
WEP 128 / Open 128bit WEP Encryption with no authentication
WEP 128 / Shared 128bit WEP Encryption with shared key authentication
WPA TKIP WPA TKIP Encryption with Pre Shared Key
WPA2 TKIP WPA2 TKIP Encryption with Pre Shared Key
WPA2 AES WPA AES Encryption with Pre Shared Key

In this example we will select the highest level of security WPA2 AES.

Enter the encryption key in the field below.


Usually you want to use the Pass Phrase option. If you want to enter an encryption key
that contains non-printable characters, use Hex Key to enter the characters in
hexadecimal format.
For WEP 64 (Open or Shared) enter 5 character as Pass Phrase, respectively 10 hex
digits when you selected Hex Key. For WEP 128 (Open or Shared) enter 13 characters,
respectively 26 hex digits.
For WPA enter a Pass Phrase of at least 8 characters and 63 characters maximum. If
you choose the Hex key option enter exactly 64 hex digits.
You may activate Hide Characters in order to enter the characters masked.
For security reasons the encryption key will not be shown the next time you run the
Wizard. To leave it unchanged just do no change any entries in this field. Else you have
to re-enter it.

Click Finish to complete the configuration.

Install the EDICwlan for wireless operation


Make sure your computer is connected to the Wireless Infrastructure either by WLAN or
LAN.
Disconnect your EDICwlan from USB.
Start EDIC Configuration Manager and select the entry of your EDICwlan.
Click the Add button. After the reminder to have your EDICwlan powered and in range
you will have to enter the DHCP name or the IP-Address of your EDICwlan.

Click Finish to establish and save the connection to the EDICwlan. The EDICwlan is
now ready for use.

If the connection cannot be established, the EDICwlan wireless installation will not be
completed. Check the preconditions displayed in the message box. Try the Check
Connection Ping Tool to see if the wireless connection is working.

4.9 Installation of VAS5054A Interfaces
The VAS5054A supports USB or Bluetooth connections.

If your VAS5054A is connected to your computer using USB the


Bluetooth Radio of your VAS5054A is automatically disabled. In this
case your Bluetooth software will not be able to find it.

Connecting the VAS5054A via USB


Please install the application software before connecting the VAS5054A to your
computer.

The VAS5054A is not powered over the USB cable from your computer!
You have to connect it to the vehicle power supply in order to get it
power-supplied.

Connect your VAS5054A to the computer using the enclosed USB cable. As the
VAS5054A connected via USB offers Plug & Play services Windows will automatically
recognize the new hardware.
On Windows XP the Found New Hardware Wizard is started. Follow the instructions as
described in chapter 4.1.

Changing the configuration of the VAS5054A

Start the EDIC Configuration Manager.

Select your VAS5054A from the list of interfaces and click the Settings button to display
the current configuration.
The settings of the VAS5054A can be changed via USB or Bluetooth.
Changing the settings via Bluetooth is only possible if your VAS5054A is
not connected via USB and a working serial Bluetooth link between PC
and VAS5054A has been set up previously.
If your VAS5054A requires a Bluetooth Passkey that you do not know, a
connection via Bluetooth cannot be established. You have to do the
configuration via USB cable.

The Device Settings Tab offers the following options.


The VAS5054A has a the built-in buzzer that may give an alarm after a preset time
when the connection to the host computer is lost. This may be useful to avoid forgetting
to disconnect the device from a vehicle after use.
Mark the Enable Buzzer checkbox to activate the buzzer to give an alarm after the time
entered in the Buzzer Time field. The range is from 15 seconds to 65535 seconds. The
timer starts to run when the physical connection to the host computer is lost, i.e. the
USB cable is unplugged or the Bluetooth connection is interrupted. The buzzer alarm
will continue until the device is unplugged or when the device is automatically turned off
by the Power Off option. By default the buzzer is disabled.

The Power Off option automatically powers off the device after a certain time to avoid
discharging the battery.
Enable Power Off by marking the checkbox and set the Power Off Time to a value that
is greater than the Buzzer Time. After the device has automatically been powered-off
you have to remove the device and plug it in again. Ignition state change from off to on
will also power up the VAS5054A again. The range for Power Off Time is 15 seconds to
65535 seconds. By default automatic Power Off is disabled.

The Bluetooth Settings Tab offers the following options:


This tab allows to change Passkey and Bluetooth device name. To change the Passkey
enter up to 16 characters. To change the Bluetooth Name of your VAS5054A enter up
to 17 characters. The serial number in angle brackets is appended automatically to the
Bluetooth Name and cannot be changed. The Passkey is set to the 9-digit serial
number of the device by default.
VAS5054A supports four Bluetooth security modes. To configure Bluetooth security
select one of the listed Security Modes:
Mode 1: no security, no encryption, the device will never ask for authentication or
pairing, a PIN is not required
Mode 2: Security level is determined by the service, VAS5054A always asks for
authentication, Passkey is required, no encryption.
Mode 3: VAS5054A always asks for authentication, Passkey required, no encryption
Mode 4: Mode 3 with link level encryption added. This is the default value.

Click Finish to save your settings, Cancel to abort all changes or Reset to restore the
default settings.

Connecting VAS5054A via Bluetooth

Before configuring VAS5054a for Bluetooth connection, please make


sure that you have followed the Generic instructions for all Bluetooth-
connected interfaces (see section 4.1 on page 11).

Start the EDIC Configuration Manager. Make sure, that you have activated your
Bluetooth hard- and software on your computer The VAS5054A has to be powered and
to be within range.

Click the Add button:

Confirm the preconditions to go on. EDIC Configuration Manager is scanning for


Bluetooth devices. After the scan is completed the found Bluetooth devices are
displayed.

If your VAS5054A device is not listed you may start another scan by pressing the
Rescan button. Make sure your VAS5054A device is in range und powered. Select the
device you want to add and press Next >.

If your VAS5054A was already connected before by the Bluetooth
software of your computer or has been added previously in the EDIC
Configuration Manager it will not be shown in this dialog. The dialog
only shows new devices.

If your VAS5054A device is not found by the scan process you may manually define the
COM port associated to your VAS5054A by clicking Enter COM Port. Select the COM
port from the list or type in the correct COM port if it is not listed.

Please enter the Passkey for the VAS5054A device. The default Passkey is the 9-digit
serial number of the device. If you do not remember the Passkey, you can check and
change it in the “Settings” dialog of the EDIC Configuration Manager when connected
via USB.
Click Next > to complete the installation.
The EDIC Configuration Manager installs the Bluetooth connection and connects to the
VAS5054A device.
Windows will notify you when the device driver has been installed successfully.

Bluetooth offers only a limited bandwidth. Bandwidth is reduced further


with increasing distance or interference from other Bluetooth and WLAN
devices nearby.
For high performance requirements use VAS5054A via USB.

4.10 Installation of VAS5055 Interfaces
The VAS5055 is a interface that is connected by a USB cable to the host computer.
Please install the application software before connecting a VAS5055 to your computer.

The VAS5055 is not powered over the USB cable from your computer!
You have to connect it to the vehicle power supply in order to get it
power-supplied.

Connect your VAS5055 to the computer using the enclosed USB cable. As the
VAS5055 offers Plug & Play services, Windows will automatically recognize the new
hardware.
On Windows XP the Found New Hardware Wizard is started. Follow the instructions as
described in chapter 4.1.
