Extraction of Bitumen
Objective:
To determine the percent asphalt and aggregate gradation of
asphalt aggregate mixes.

Background:
An extraction test is a quality-control procedure to assure that a
bituminous paving mixture (which has been constructed) contains
the proper proportions of the required ingredients. The sample
therefore consists usually of a core extracted from a pavement, but
in this lab one of the designed specimens will be used.

Equipment:
1. Extraction Apparatus.
2. Filter paper ring.
3. Balance.

Procedure:
1. Release the clamps.
2. Removed the lid of the rotating bowl by unscrewing the
retaining.
3. Removed the bowl from the extraction apparatus and obtain the
empty weight to the nearest 0.1 g.
4. Place a 500 to 1000g sample of bituminous paving mixture in
the bowl and place it in the oven at about 250 ˚F until the
mixture breaks up easily.
5. Fit the dried and weight filter ring to the nearest 0.01 g.
6. Replace the lid of the bowl and fit the external cover and
clamps.
7. Pour sufficient solvent into the top opening to cover the sample.
8. Start the motor. Speed is automatically regulated to reach
maximum after 15 second.
9. Switch off the motor and apply brake to stop the machine.
10. Add about 200ml solvent through the top opening and restart.
11. Carefully remove filter disc.
12. Place the filter paper ring along with the bowl and specimen in
the oven dry at 230 ˚F.

Calculation & Data:

 Wt. of specimen before extraction = A = 131 g
 Wt, of specimen after extraction = B = 116 g
 Wt. of filter paper after extraction = C = 19.8 g
 Wt. of filter paper before extraction = D = 18.3 g

A – {B + (C – D)}
 % Bitumen = ‫ ـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ‬x 100 %
A

131 – {116 + (19.8 – 18.3)}

 % Bitumen = ‫ ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ‬x 100 % = 10 %
131

Discussion & Conclusion:

 The speed of the motor of the extraction apparatus is 3600
revolutions per minute.

 The reason why we place the filter paper in the oven after
extraction for a very short time is because benzene evaporates
quickly and leaving the filter paper in the oven dry a very long
time would cause the filter paper to burn. This is a very possible
error.

 The filter paper captivates filter. Which are very fine aggregates
which pass sieve #200.

 The grading of aggregates can be determining using sieve

analysis method.
