All questions carry equal marks 4 × 10 = 40 MARKS

1. (a) A trolley car of total weight 3000N runs on rails of 1.5m gauge and
travels a curve 30m radius at 8.7 m/s. The rails are being at the same
level. The car has four wheels of 72cm diameter and each of the two
axles is driven by a motor running in an opposite direction to the wheels
at a speed of 5 times the speed of rotation of vehicle. Each axle with
gear and wheels has a Moment of inertia 147kg m2. Each motor with the
shaft and gear pinion has a Moment of inertia 10.5kg m2 and has centre
of gravity 90 cm above the rail level. Allowing the centrifugal and
gyroscopic action, determine the vertical force exerted by each wheel
on the rails.

(b) Define the terms with sketch of a naval ship: i. Bow ii. Stern
iii. Starboard iv. Port v. Steering vi. Pitching and vii. Rolling.

2. (a) Derive the expression for the efficiency of the inclined plane, when
the body is moving up the plane.

(b) A screw jack has a square thread of mean diameter 6 cm and pitch
0.8 cm. the coefficient of friction at the screw thread is 0.09. A load of
3kN is to be lifted through 12 cm. Determine the torque required and the
work done in lifting the load through 12 cm. Find the efficiency of the
jack also.

3. (a) Derive the equation K = e/2E where K=Coefficient of fluctuation of

speed, e=maximum Fluctuation of energy and E=Kinetic energy.

Don’t Write Anything on question paper

(b) The effective mean diameter of contact surfaces of a cone clutch is
76mm. the semi-angle of the cone is 16 degrees and the coefficient of
friction is 0.3. Assuming uniform rate of wear, determine the torque
required to produce slipping of the clutch, if the axial force applied is
200N. The clutch connects an electric motor running at a uniform speed of
1200rpm to a flywheel which is stationary. The moment of inertia of
flywheel is 0.25 Kg-m2. Calculate the time required attaining the full speed
and also the energy lost in slipping of the clutch.

4. (a) the weight of reciprocating parts of a horizontal engine is 3kN. The

difference between driving and back pressures when crank has travelled
600 from inner dead center is 4 N/cm2. The crank pin radius is 350mm and
the diameter of cylinder is 600mm. the connecting rod length between
centers is 130cm. if the speed of engine is 300 rpm, determine, for the
given crank position, (i) force on cylinder wall (ii) thrust in connecting rod
(iii) tangential force on crank pin and (iv) turning moment.

(b) A machine requires torque given by 6000+600sinθ N-m to drive it, θ

being the angle of rotation of shaft measured from a reference. The
machine is coupled to an engine that produces a torque of 6000+700sin 2θ
N-m. Determine the fluctuation of energy.
