1. Review on graphing systems of linear equations in two
variables.
2. The teacher lets the students graph the given systems of
linear equations in two variables.
 y=x+7
y = -2x + 1

Answer:

B. Establishing a
purpose for the lesson Motive Questions:
1. How do you describe the graph of the system of
equations? (The graph is either a system of consistent and
independent equations, system of consistent and
dependent equations, and system of inconsistent
equations.)
2. Are the graphs intersecting lines? If yes, what are the
coordinates of the lines? (Yes, the coordinates are (-2, 5).)
3. What do you think do the coordinates of the point of
intersection of the lines mean? (The coordinates of the
point of the intersection of the lines mean the solution of
the equations.)
C. Presenting examples EXAMPLES:
of the new lesson Find the solutions of the following systems of linear
equations graphically.
(a) {2 x+ y=7
−x + y=1
(b) { 3 x+ y=4
3 x− y=−5
(c)

{ x−2=−5
2 x−4 y=−10

Solutions: (a): The graphs of 2x + y = 7 and -x + y = 1

intersect at (2, 3). Hence, the solution of the system 2x +
y = 7 -x + y = 1 is x = 2 and y = 3.

(b): The graphs of 3x + y = 4 and 3x + y = 10 are parallel.

Hence, the system 3x + y = 4 3x – y = -5 has no solution.

(c): The graphs of x – 2y = -5 and 2x – 4y = -10 coincide.

Hence, the system x – 2 = -5 2x – 4y = -10 has infinite
number of solutions.

D. Discussing new ACTIVITY:

concepts and Graph and solve the following systems of linear equations
practicing new skills in two variables.
#1
1. { y =3 x−2
8 x +7 y=15
2. { x− y=6
2 x +7 y=−6

Answer:
1. Solution: (1, 1) 2. Solution: (4, -2)

E. Discussing new We can identify if the given ordered pair is a solution or

concepts and not on the systems of linear equations through
practicing new skills substituting the values of the variable on the equations.
#2 You may also use the GeoGebra application in identifying
each if it’s a solution or not.

Example: Identify whether the ordered pair is a solution

set of the system
1. (2, 4) 2x + 3y = 16, 3x – y = 2

Solution:
(1) 2x + 3y = 16 (2) 3x – y = 2
2(2) + 3(4) = 16 3(2) – 4 = 2
4 + 12 = 16 6–4=2
16 = 16 2=2

Hence, the ordered pair is a solution set of the system.

F. Developing Mastery Group Activity
ACTIVITY 5: What Satisfies Both?
Directions: Solve each of the following systems of linear
equations graphically, then check. You may also use
GeoGebra to verify your answer. If the system of linear
equations has no solution, explain why.

G. Finding practical WORD PROBLEMS:

applications of Solve the following problem.
concepts and skills in 1. Mother is three times as old as her son. Ten years from
daily living now, Mother will be two times as old as her son. How old
are they now?

Answer:
Let y = age of Mother
x = age of her son
Mother is three times as old as her son so, we have
y = 3x (1).
In ten years, Mother will be two times as old as her son.
Thus, we have y + 10 = 2(x + 10) (2).
Solve for y in terms of x in equation (2).
y = 2x + 10
Thus, we have the system

{ y=3 x (1)
y=2 x+10( 2)

The solution is (10, 30). Therefore, the son is 10 years

old now while the Mother is 30 years old now.

H. Making Answer the following questions:

Generalizations and 1. How to determine the solutions of the systems of linear
abstractions about equations in two variables using the graph? (We can
the lesson determine the solutions of the systems of linear equations
in two variables using the graph through the point of the
intersection of the two graphs.)
2. When does a system of linear equations in two
variables has one solution? Has no solution? Has infinite
number of solutions? (A system will only have one
solution if the graphs intersect at exactly one point. A
system will have no solution if the graphs are parallel to
each other. A system will have infinite number of
solutions if the graphs coincide.)

Content: Solving systems of linear equations in two variables using graphing

DISCUSSIONS:

One way of finding the solution of a system of linear equations is by

graphing the equations on the same set of axes. The point/s of
intersection of the graphs is/are the solution/s of the system.
