Dasein - ‘being-there’.

Recognition of existence alongside other being

‘Being-in-the-world’ by definition. ‘Worldhood’ is the core of our experience.

Only dasein is ‘in-the-world’ in the sense of being open to it and disclosing it - being able to
have experience of ourselves within the world.

Chair is ‘within’ the world, we are ‘in’ the world. The chair is an object within worldhood, we
experience the world (moving within it experientially).

existentiality

Truths and knowledge is revealed to us via a human element. Without dasein, it would be a
physical world. It is our capacity for experience that allows things to be revealed. Projection
of possibilities that shows that dasein understands things. Projecting possibilities is connected
with knowledge.

When i see the chair, because i am familiar with the chair, i understand the
possibilities of what can be done with it because i am oriented towards the future.

Being a whole - existence of beings and the world

Being oneself - awareness of your own existence

Falling into the ‘they’/everyday - inauthentic existence where we are obsessed with beings
(things/people) and flee from the ‘self’. Falling is the inauthentic identification with things in
the world (subjects + objects). In falling, we submerge ourselves into the ‘they’ - i identify
with the present entities that surround me in the day, espeically objects of desire, and
obsessing with culture. Basic critique of modern mass culture.

Most of us are living according to the ‘they’, rather than an authentic mode of existence. We
flee into the ‘theyself’. Heidegger wants us to feel anxiety - the proper response to the
finite, open-ended nature of experience.

In every moment, we are in a state of mind - a mood - with that, we carry the weight of the
past. Authentic way - “mood”. Anxiety is a result of care. Only when we feel anxiety do we
begin to recognise the truth of human existence. In caring is to be ahead of itself in being
already in the world as being alongside other entities. To understand what dasein would be if
it completed itself, truly its own and authetic.

Ahead of itself - understand possibilities for the future. Take that understanding of my future
which leads to the question of where does it lead - to death. To live towards death is what is
required for an authentic dasein. Knowledge of moving to a finite end.
Potentiality of being guilty - to recognise what i am not. Existential guilt is a good thing.
Awareness of my finite as well as the awareness that we are full of absences and lacks. Guilt
is the knowledge of our lacking - finitude of morality, mortality etc

“Anticipatory resoluteness” - authentic being - resolute acceptance of my guilt in the


anticipation of my death.

Temporality unifies the analysis using the 3 modes of time (PPF). Letting dasein come towards
itself in making other entities present - temporality contextualises the meaning of being.

Time is one’s authentic self coming towards oneself in already always having been there
in the act of recognising the presence of other entities.
