DV5800 XPe Bootable USB Key Installation Instructions

The following are the instructions for re-imaging a DV5800 laser imager using the Windows XP
embedded-based bootable USB key. Also included are descriptions of the files located in the
root directory of the key that can be modified to allow for loading alternate ghost file names or
for modifications to the BIOS search string to allow imaging of older versions of the 5800
motherboards.

- Power-off imager.
- Cover all film trays and remove the right side panel of the imager.
- Insert key to USB port on motherboard (no need to disconnect any internal USB connector).
- Power-on imager
- The BIOS will be checked to ensure that this is a 5800 (BCM) motherboard. If it is,
ghosting will continue. If it isn’t, ghost will exit and fail.
o By default, the string “EBC5852-K” is used as the BIOS search
o To override this and search for something else, change the string in the
“biosString.txt” file. (Note: The search string should not be multiple lines or
have any CR/LF in it.)
o Some of the original 5800 EM machines with preliminary BIOS did not contain
the string referenced above. For those machines, another file has been included
on the key (OLDbiosString.txt) which contains a string that will match with the
BIOS on those machines. Copy the OLDbiosString.txt file over top of the
biosString.txt file before re-imaging one of those older EM imagers.
- Key will automatically install ghost image to the imager (takes 3-4 minutes)
o The default name of the image to be installed is set as “5800.gho”.
o This image must be located in the root partition of the USB key.
o To use an alternate ghost filename:
ƒ place the alternate ghost file into the root partition
ƒ modify the ghostFilename.txt file to contain the name of the new ghost file.
(Note: the filename can contain spaces.)
- When LED light on the key stops flashing, install is complete.
o If install is SUCCESSFUL - the imager will also emit 3 high-pitched beeps.
o If the install FAILS for any reason (BIOS check, ghost image file failure), the
imager will emit 10 low-pitched beeps.
- Note: If you have a monitor/keyboard/mouse attached, the command window will contain
text showing success/failure of the ghosting procedure. The window is left in a
“minimized” state by the procedure. The user will need to click the “maximize” button to
open the window and see the contents.
- Power-off imager.
- Remove USB key.
- Power-on imager.
