Frederic Teschner
Editions B42 2019 ISBN 9782917855997 Acqn 29710
Pb 20x29cm 232pp col ills £38.95

This monograph is dedicated to the French graphic designer Frederic Teschner. Whether dealing
with the visual arts, music, or theatre, Teschner's approach has relied on graphic communication
as a vehicle for the values of public service. He always strives to create a visual context for a
dialogue between ordinary people and public cultural activities, and essentially sees the role of
the graphic designer as interlocuter between design and its audience. A number of contributors
offer detailed insight into various aspects of Teschner's oeuvre in this comprehensive overview
and tribute, which also includes a large portfolio of his work and a detailed chronological
biography.

Lecturis 2019 ISBN 9789462263239 Acqn 29706
Pb 22x33cm 176pp col ills £38.50

Irina Birger's first monograph, 'The Book of Happiness and Sadness' contains numerous vivid,
text-based drawings from the artist's diary of words, forms, and colours, as well as photographs
of her exhibitions and performances. The publication, created by graphic designer Franziska
Morlok of studio Rimini Berlin, presents the act of drawing as a self-contemplative study, whereby
the artist hopes to provoke a similar contemplation in the reader. Moreover, an essay written by
independent curator Katia Krupennikova examines Birger's work in connection with significant
dilemmas in today's society, such as the concept of the group versus individualism and
interdependency.

Konomad 2019 ISBN 9780998620527 Acqn 29703

'Memorandom' records the personal expressions of New York-based artist Sayaka Maruyama
between 2011 and 2019, including photography, drawings, paintings, collages, objects, and
images from her short films. The notions of beauty and other thoughts that randomly pass
through her mind have been visualised and then translated into book form by the artist herself,
because how each person perceives the world cannot always be explained logically. Maruyama
records indefinable emotions and moments, thereby weaving multiple layered dialogues that
result in a personal, poetic, and tangible portrait. Includes a conversation between the artist and

When American surfers were sent to fight in Vietnam they took their boards with them, or at least
tried to. Born on the beaches of California and Hawaii, surfing was a peaceful youth culture at
odds with the politics of jungle conflict. As the first story in 'The Americana Issue' tells, the
soldiers relied on the healing power of riding a wave. The magazine presents this and other
stories gleaned from archives, covering topics like the Manhattan Project, powerful black female
imagery, Jean Baudrillard on 9/11, visions of roadside America by John Margolies, Tony Oursler
and the paranormal, Anthony Faramelli on symbolism and liberalism, alternative press from Provo
to punk, and more.

Richard Goodwin - God In Reverse

Uro Publications 2019 ISBN 9780994396662 Acqn 29717

A native of New South Wales, Richard Goodwin is an artist, architect, and urban activist whose
aversion to following the rules has made him somewhat of a maverick critic of architecture and
urbanism, particularly within Sydney. Authored and illustrated by Goodwin, this monograph
features over 40 years of his work, wherein he fuses biography, fiction, criticism, observation, and
imagination in a totally unorthodox fashion. It reveals a broad range of philosophies and cultural
influences that underpin Goodwin's practice, and elaborates on his unique and experimental
world view as it applies to his architecture, public artworks, sculpture, drawings, and performance
art.

The Curatorial In Parallax (What Museums Do 1)

MMCA 2019 ISBN 9788963031972 Acqn 29720
Pb 15x23cm 280pp ills £30

Research is of paramount importance as a fundamental basis for everything that museums do.
This finely presented publication engages with the diverse viewpoints of authors in the vanguard
of theoretical discussions and curatorial practices, mapping out the multiplicity of endeavours to
reform and transform research in relation to the art museum. From new theoretical models and
specific forms of practice-based investigation and knowledge production, to the potential for
change by the very dynamics of research, it shows that the concept of the curatorial is constantly
shifting. With contributions by Pascal Gielen, Margriet Schavemaker, Simon Sheikh, Beck Jee-

To Mind Is To Care
V2_publishers 2019 ISBN 9789082893519 Acqn 29721
Pb 16x23cm 212pp col ills £21.95

Care provides a foundation for modernity that is not characterised by new beginnings and an
opposition to nature, but by a humble and curious curation of what already or still exists. It is as
much a matter of design and economics as of politics and administration. This book proposes
ethico-aesthetical models of care in which science does not search for deterministic outcomes,
technology does not lead to abandonment, politics does not induce indifference, and art is not
marginalised. Included are contributions by Michael Marder, Driessens & Verstappen, Frank
Pasquale, Jeannette Pols, Bernard Stiegler, Maria Puig de la Bellacasa, Frederiek Bennema, and
others.

Cecilia Vicuna - Seehearing The Enlightened Failure

Witte De With 2019 ISBN 9789491435591 Acqn 29724
Pb 20x26cm 360pp col ills £39

This book appears in conjunction with Cecilia Vicuna's retrospective exhibition at Witte de With in
Rotterdam. The comprehensive show highlights the wide-ranging oeuvre of this self-taught
Chilean artist, poet, and filmmaker whose work in the 1970s seemed incomprehensible in an
environment dominated by performances and urban interventions that drew from a Western
perspective of the avant-garde. The perception that her painting is amateur, intuitive, or non-
professional is closely aligned with the kind of creative act that interests her. Vicuna's cyclical
understanding of this very act is conveyed through the return of ideas that do not exist as "final
objects" but rather as rehearsals.

Csilla Klenyanszki - Pillars Of Home

For the series entitled 'Pillars of Home', visual artist Csilla Klenyanszki built 98 sculptures that
reach from the floor to the ceiling using everyday objects found in her apartment. The temporary
installations are of different scales and their level of complexity is also varied. The carefully
arranged objects balance each other, seemingly about to collapse at any moment. The delicate
sculptures, hastily constructed during her son's nap, somehow balance on the border between
the virtual world and reality. They spring up everywhere in her home - the living room, kitchen,
bedroom, and even the staircase - existing in what became a temporary studio for no more than
30 minutes at a time.

drawings by this seminal artist. As an Artist-in-Residence in 2017, Jonas was drawn to the vast
array of mythical and archetypal animals present in the Gardner's collection. Drawn from objects
made of lace, stone, metal, wood, and ceramic, or found in tapestries and paintings, the animal
figures allude to the importance of nature's life force in the face of disruptive human presence. In

Art And Theory Publishing 2019 ISBN 9789188031778 Acqn 29844
Hb 23x30cm 144pp col ills £30.95

The artist duo Bigert & Bergstrom have long been interested in producing conceptually and
technically complex sculptures and installations with a twist. While their work often touches on
serious issues of social and environmental sustainability, humour plays an essential part in their
practice. The idea for Solar Egg arose from the ongoing geographical repositioning of an entire
city, Kiruna in northern Sweden. After decades of extensive tunnelling the old mining town has to
be relocated due to the risk of collapse. When Riksbyggen, one of the developers involved in
rebuilding the town, decided to commission a public artwork that would engage the community,
the idea of a fully functioning sauna was born. Bigert & Bergstrom developed Solar Egg as a
platform for discussion and a place of reflection. This book chronicles the making of the artwork,
from rough sketches and blueprints, via studio visits to the tour of the final piece.

The brainchild of artists Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman and engineers Billy Kluver

alienation brought on by rapid technological advancement. The group hoped to inspire new

Perimeter Editions 2019 ISBN 9780648262893 Acqn 29855

Time is perhaps the central actor in Steve Carr's wider practice. Operating somewhere between
photography, moving image, and a kind of deferred mode of performance, the New Zealand artist
seems to slow time to a crawl as he interweaves actions, experiments, and unlikely cultural
references to create transitory, richly aesthetic moments. 'Smoke Bubbles 1-58' comprises a
series Carr produced during a residency in Japan in 2010. Taking the cover of Smokey
Robinson's 1973 debut LP as his inspiration, the images are both planetary and preposterous in
their appearance - page after page of soap bubbles filled with cigarette smoke floating against an
inky black backdrop.
