Srebrenica area: Strategic Importance for Muslims

CrC<Hlon of Cordoll (Geographical Center Qr Ishlm)

According to Muslim National Council established on the eve of Bajram ([he end of February in 1992, the goal of all radical Muslims led by Jzetbegovlc Wal 10 create [he Islamic Slate withi the borders of BHw. The largest concern to achieve this goal was the geographical andethnical clo cncss b ,tween eastern Bosnia and Serbia in Yugoslavia. Taking into the consideration the fact that south eastern Bosnia already had demographic and I larnic connection to Sandzak and Kosovo in Serbia the crious problem lay in • north eastern Bosnia', where Srebrenica area stretched over. Therefor ,then; was an urgeol necessity to drawa cordon between Serbs ineastern Bosniaand Serbs lin Scrbia11,'nderthese circumstances, a huge numbel' of invitations to the gathering in Bratuna ' in Srebrenica area were distributed among Muslims throughout Bosnia at the beginning of ,1992, and the large galh 'ling was held in Bratunac on Ihe first day of Bajram the celebration to end Ramadan, in the pre nee or lzetbegovic, There, Bratunac was proclaimed 'Geogruphiccenrer 0(' 1uslim for the whol (form .r) Yugoslavia,' and to arm Muslims was openly declared.

Mutual Fear

III the middle of the radical T larnic and militant activities, however, the general Mu: lim citizens in Srebrenica area were afraid of this abrupt militant move in their area: in the same way that Serbs were frightened. As Besim lbisevic (Muslim), former President of Township Assembly" in rebrcnica, told a focal magazine in Sarajevo, the general Muslim citizens had shouted 'peace at any cost' in the big, crowded hall of culture club in Srebrenica in April 199213. People in Srebrenica, therefore, did n I allow Muslim extremists, such as Naser Oric and Zulfo Tursunovic, to enter the Srebrenica area at the beginning. According. to the confession of Naser himself he had 1.0 hide in forests I. gcther wiih hi fellows, and gel food secreuy". Behind the scene, however, rifle and u.oiJorms had ben already sent

From 1992 to January 1993, Bosnian Serb citizens In Srebrenica area were at. the mercy of Muslim forces .. Srebrenica as {\ temporary base of Muslim attack

Under the plan of Muslim leaders, Muslims" territories in Srebrenicu, Zepaand Gorazdc v re supposed to grow endlessly until the three areas would merge into a huge chunk connecting c ntral and north eastern Bosnia and create a huge cordon between Muslim state and Serbia in Yugoslavia, When Muslims' territory in Srebrenica area hi! the ceiling of expansion however, this plan collapsed, and therole ofSrebrenica changed .. Now, they werejust like j. olaied islands in the enemy' s sea, waiting for she control of the enemy. Missing List

tt is said that as many as 6,000 - 8.000 M.usHm men were executed by Bosnian Serb forces. However. this figur is evidently infrared, There are several factors thllt expand the actuat figure. irst faclor is the high ratio of Muslim women In military capable m n in a family. In general. Ihe average number of women are about 3 or 4, (he srandmother, the mother, the wife ~lI1d a sister in a Muslim family. usually consisting of more (han 8 members. On the other hand, the number of military capable m n is 1 or 2, rhc father if he is young nough and a brother i h i, ld enough. Therefore. i r one f t military capable men becomes missing. three women anxious about rhe fate of their beloved one would report to JeRe individually as a rnis iiru; person, The name could be ~Iightly changed because a nickname is sometimes more popular than tlh real name .. ThU • ihe number of mi 'sillg pCI. us would become two-fold. When the author visited Muslim WOl1'lCn that \ ere living i!11 Sarajevo HS refugees from Srebreaica, more than ten women clime in order '0 U k the autbor to find [he whereabouts of the 1\\10 men,

Another factor is the desp rate efforts of Muslim women from Srebrenica to support th ir live, . Havin ~ strived in Kladanj and Tuzla either by til bus vacuarion a{ (he fall r Srebrenica or by 'orne other means before the fall of Srebr nica, Muslim women brained Identity ard of a citizen of Klad nj or Tuzla. However. as they moved mo ly to Sarajevo. they got another Identity Curd of Sarajevo, Thus, the)' arc able to secure aidin Kladanj I Tuzla as well as aiel in Sarajevo. One of the Mu lim women fhat (.II author met in Sarajevo whispered secretly, saying [hal she had two Identity Cards to receive the aid twice.

ext facto" is the Intention of Muslim government to manipulate the election in Srebrcnica. Acco <ling to [he document compiled by the local S rbs in Srebrcnlca, about 3,500 Muslim name, r gi tered as voters in 1997 had not been lh per ons who used to liv in rebrenica, All 3,500 tH.1ll1CS Ihat the author saw in th sir leuer 0 rnplaim t S E were fernal nam s.Palsc registration gave the clc lion victory f Srebrenica to Muslim LlO film nt and gave aid [0 worn n registered falsely, All three factors also bee me the r asons who so many luslim women '<lid that their b loved ones had h en killed in Srebrcnica,

Moreover, there were a number of narn without daje of birth in (he mi. sing list Thes name: amount as much as about ~.381 out of 6.,610 who became missing at til fall of Srebreuica, Since it is strange l11;)l't close relative lid 11 r know the birth dale of rheir belovedin rcgisterincllJ6, there must be
