In the shelter shed we were entertained by a few
leeches that appeared out of who knows where to
make their escape across the pavers. We also met a

time...

Patches of blue sky were appearing so we felt

confident enough to pack away our raincoats and
embark on the next part of the loop. The first
destination was Greenes Falls which is an easy
downhill. We noticed an increase in the number of
walking groups especially young families, which was
good to see, despite the weather.

A wet start at Maiala

Seven reasonably intrepid walkers met up at Maiala
National Park at 8am. I say 'reasonably intrepid' as
there were leaden skies with light showers and it
seemed that the biggest challenge would be staying
dry on the walk. But oh no – how wrong we were! We
were happy that the showers remained light, sporadic
and virtually unnoticed.

But what we did notice were the leeches! You'd swear

that the leeches hadn't seen a drop of rain for six
months and were coming out to party. Well ok, they
probably hadn't seen any rain for six months, but they
sure hadn't lost their instinct for blood. As soon as we
entered the rainforest along the Western Window walk Greenes Falls
the leeches began to join us. The problem was that
every time we stopped to remove them, it gave others We arrived at the falls in good time and they were

towards the carpark.

To make the return trip a bit different, we took the

Cypress Grove and Rainforest Circuit options. The
ferns and other greenery in the gullys were quite
attractive. We even spotted a pademelon, though it
wouldn't stand still for a photo.

We were back at the carpark by a little past noon and

the consensus was that we had walked 11 kilometres
in total. It didn't seem that far, which probably showed
the difference of finally walking in cooler temperatures.
It was decided that the Samford Patisserie would be
the lunch venue. A short trip down the hill and we were
soon enjoying pies, drinks and healthy food.

Vale Norm Johnston

Norm joined the Queensland Bushwalkers Club in February 2010. With his skills and experience
Norm was welcomed as a regular walk leader in the club. His steady approach to walk preparation
and execution, and his consultative and self effacing style of walk leadership gave clues to his
background. It became apparent during chats around a few campfires that his past life experiences
as a member of the Australian Army (Vietnam service) and years as a patrol officer in Papua New
Guinea contributed to his abilities in the bush. Norm soon found and appreciated the company of
other members of the club who shared similar experiences.

In the nine years Norm was with us, he led a wide variety of walks which were frequently off-track,
sometimes multi-day, and almost always innovative. Thanks to his northern NSW origins, he was
largely responsible for introducing many club members to a number of walks along the Qld/NSW
border and further south. Through Norm we enjoyed the company of several NSW walkers and
kayakers on camping trips. Norm also shared his abseiling skills in places like Watson Falls,
Kinnane Falls, and Back Creek.

While expanding our knowledge of local walks, Norm enjoyed a few trips abroad with fellow club
members. This included an ascent of Mt Kinabalu in Malaysia, the Sandakan Death March walk in
Borneo, and the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. Norm's written accounts of his walks were
frequently laced with a good sense of humour and revealed his sensitivity to the needs of his
walking companions. He also engaged enthusiastically in social events and Christmas parties,
where his colourful and imaginative dress up costurmes were regularly a highlight.

When presented with the diagnosis of non-Hodgkinsons Lymphoma, Norm typically advised that he
planned to be one of the survivors. Sadly his optimism wasn't rewarded. However his gentle dignity,
desire to be part of club activities wherever possible, good humour, and appreciation for the
company and welfare of his fellow bushwalkers were always apparent. On 2 March 2019 we
received word that Norm had passed away.
Norm, rest in peace, assured that you will be missed.

He there does now enjoy eternal Rest

And happy Ease, which thou dost want and crave,
And further from it daily wanderest:
What if some little Pain the Passage have,
That makes frail Flesh to fear the bitter Wave?
Is not short Pain well born, that brings long Ease,
And lays the Soul to sleep in quiet Grave?
Sleep after Toil, Port after stormy Seas,
Ease after War, Death after Life, does greatly please.
