Hirsch said Lifeline is trying to decrease intake by offering
programs to local communities.
“We wish we knew the cause of the increase in animals,
but both strays and surrenders were up across the board.
We are unable to pinpoint any reasons. Most of these issues
would be resolved if everyone spayed/neutered their pets,
microchipped their pets and kept their pets from roaming,”

Discover the forest more than 3,600 animals.
Lifeline officials said the organization plans to hold fee-

Lifeline also plans to unveil a Community Animal
Center in DeKalb County in October. The additional facil-
ity will be larger than the Avondale Estates location and
will allow Lifeline to increase capacity by 2,000 annually,
Hirsch said.
The Community Animal Center will also provide a full-
service, low-cost veterinary clinic that will be open to the
public.
Hirsch said she hopes the metro-Atlanta community
steps up and helps save some of the animals in the shelter.
“Consider opening up your home and fostering a pet
for whatever amount of time you can. Even a week helps to
make space for other animals and may save a life,” Hirsch
said. “[The shelters are] more stressful on the animals be-
cause they have less space. It is noisier and they don’t get
as much one-on-one attention. It is also extremely stressful
for all of the employees who become attached to these ani-
mals and who are working desperately to find them homes,
knowing they may not make it out of the shelter.”
