Database mirroring is a solution that increases database accessibility by allowing access to a mirrored database on another server if the primary server fails. It requires at least two SQL Server instances - a principal and mirror instance. Optionally, a witness instance can be used for automatic failover. To set up mirroring, a full database backup must be restored to the mirror instance in NO RECOVERY mode followed by transaction log backups. Mirroring is configured by specifying the principal, mirror and optional witness instances and endpoints. It can operate asynchronously or synchronously with automatic failover using the witness instance. Common errors occur if port numbers are in use or service accounts lack permissions.
