WELCOME TO PRE-CALCULUS 12/AP Calculus

Fall 2019-2020
Teacher: Ms. Daniels
Text: Pre-Calculus 12 McGrawHill-Ryerson

Pre-Calculus 12 is an academic math course designed to prepare students for entry into post secondary studies that require Calculus. The
course will be completed at the end of November at which time we will start the AP Calculus AB component . It is a rigorous math
course that builds student’s ability to solve complex mathematical problems and to use mathematics for modeling. The course addresses
the following Curricular competencies.

CURRICULAR COMPETENCIES
Students are expected to be able to do the following:
• Reasoning and analyzing
o Use reasoning and logic to analyze and apply mathematical ideas
o Estimate reasonably
o Demonstrate fluent and flexible thinking of number
o Use tools or technology to analyze relationships and test conjectures
o Model mathematics in contextualized experiences
• Understanding and solving
o Develop, demonstrate, and apply conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas
o Visualize to explore and illustrate mathematical concepts and relationships
o Apply flexible strategies to solve problems in both abstract and contextualized situations
o Engage in problem-solving experiences that are connected to place, story, cultural
o practices, and perspectives relevant to local First Peoples communities, the local
o community, and other cultures
• Communicating and representing
o Communicate mathematical thinking in many ways
o Use mathematical vocabulary and language to contribute to mathematical discussions
o Represent mathematical ideas in a variety of ways
o Explain and justify mathematical ideas
• Connecting and reflecting
o Reflect on mathematical thinking
o Use mathematics to support personal choices
o Connect mathematical concepts to each other and to other areas and personal interests
• Incorporate First Peoples worldviews and perspectives to make connections to mathematical
concepts

FINAL EXAM PART 2 TBA

Required Materials:

Binder (1 1/2 ”)
Loose leaf
Graph paper
Calculator (Graphing capacity if possible, ie. TI 84)
Geometry set

Evaluation:

Students will be assessed and evaluated through a variety of means to meet different learning styles.
As this course leads to AP Calculus traditional and Standards based grading will both be used Students
will engage in both individual and group activities to guide their learning. Students will have opportunities
to self-evaluate their own learning and celebrate achievements. Students will be encouraged to engage in
an environment that accepts and builds on individual strengths and challenges.

Following is a formal percentage breakdown of this course. This will also be supported by Standards Based
Assessment.

Quizzes: 11%
Tests 44%
Class and homework: 5%
Mid term exam: 10%
Final Evaluation: 30%
Final Exam 20%
Summary portfolio 10%

Expectations:

Respect other students, materials and the teacher.

Be on time and bring all necessary materials. Homework checks and quizzes will be at the beginning of
the period.
If you are absent you are responsible for catching up on missed work, tests and quizzes.
If you have missed a test or a quiz it is my expectation that you will make arrangements to be in my
class at lunchtime on the day of your return to make up the missing work.
Tutorials and Homework is available daily at http://www.fhcollins.ca/homework.html
Digital devices are can and will be used in the classroom. When used wisely they can enhance a student’s
learning. I ask that they be turned off when I am explaining a concept or generally addressing the class.
Texting and phone calls are distracting, please text and call in between classes.

I am available for help at lunch as well as after school as well as there is in school tutoring at lunch

A note to parents/guardians: If you need to contact your son/ daughter please do not text them in
class (it is very distracting for everyone), but call the office and they will pass the message on.
