CHAPTER IV

Results

This chapter presents the results of the qualitative research questions

which served as the key tool for the data informants produced.

The research questions are as follows:

 What are the perceived academic benefits of being into heterogeneous

section?

 What are the perceived disadvantages of being into heterogeneous

section?

 How does heterogeneous sectioning affect the academic performance

of the students?

After conducting an interview from the participants, the researchers

transcribed it. The data gathered were analyzed. The analysis of the data started

first with listening to the recorded audio of the participants during the interview,

and then followed by transcribing those data into text. The data were not just

transcribed those data into text. The data were not just transcribed but also

translated into English, since the participants make used of their vernacular

language as their medium in answering the questions. In addition, the process

also involved critical decision making about which data would have to remain

unused for this study because they were unnecessary to the research questions.
During the identification of themes of the study, important phrases that

emerged from the transcripts were identified as thematic statements. They were

listed and grouped accordingly to determine patterns and connections between

themes. In the first research question, there were three essential themes

identified which is shown in Table 1 found in the succeeding page. There were

also three essential themes identified for the research question two and two

essential themes identified for research question three. In this study, the basis in

identification of themes was the ideas highlighted by at least four participants.

Those that occurred only once were not included in the thematic statements.

Academic benefits of Heterogeneous Section to the students

There were three essential themes drawn out with regards to research

question number 1 after conducting an interview. The participants were asked on

their perceived academic benefits of being into heterogeneous section.

Table 1. Academic benefits of Heterogeneous Section to the students.

ESSENTIAL THEMES THEMATIC STATEMENTS

Motivation  Study well

 Diligent to study
 More concentrate and focus in
study
 Depending and appreciating
their own self
Freedom  Interacting with other students
 Competing with other students
 Expressing Opinion

Equality  Teachers Treatment

Motivation. This is one of the essential themes identified by the researchers for

research question 1 which is shown in Table 1.

Under this, it was found out that participants are studying well and more

diligent to study, more concentrate and focus in study and that they are

depending and appreciating their own self.

According to student number 4 when he was asked on the academic

benefits of being into heterogeneous section, he directly uttered:

“Yung nagiging masikap ka sa iyong pag-aaral

ng walang inaasahang tulong ng iba. Tapos
nagiging mas concentrate or focus ka sa iyong
study” (You are more diligent to your study without
expecting the help of other. Then you are more
concentrate or focus in your study). (RQ1a4)

Also, when student number 5 was asked, she simpy stated:

“Ang benefits nito ay nagiging matiyaga o masikap

sa pag-aaral ang isang estudyanteng involved dito
at mas natututo sila kung paano asahan ang kanilang
sarili, natututo din silang pahalagahan ang kanilang
sarili” (The benefits of this for those sudents who are
involved here are the students are more patient and
diligent to study, and they can learn how to depend and
appreciate themselves). (RQ1a5)

Freedom. This is the second theme generated from students’ responses. In this

theme, students said that they are free to interact and compete with other

students and they are free to express their opinion.

When student 2 was asked about what her perceived academic benefits in

heterogeneous section, she said:

“Kaya mong makipagkumpitensiya sa ibang estudyante

na may iba’t ibang lebel ng katalinuhan”
(You can compete with other students with different level
of intelligence). (RQ1a2)

Also, student 3 said:

“Malayang makapag-pahayag ng opinion”
(You are free to express your opinion). RQ1a3

In support of this, student 6 said:

“Nakakatulong ang Heterogeneous Sectioning dahil
nabibigyan ng pagkakataon ang ibang estudyante
na makisalamuha at ditto magkakaroon ng tiwala sa
sarili na kayang makihalubilo sa iba’t ibang tao”
(Heterogeneous Section can help the students to be able
to interact with other students and here, they will have
self-confidence to interact with different people). (RQ1a6)

Equality. Another essential theme generated is equality. When the participants

were asked about this, they revealed that there is equality in teachers treatment.

With regards to this, student 7 directly stated:

“Nagiging pantay ang lahat pagdating sa pagtuturo

ng mga guro” (Everything becomes all equal when it
comes to the teaching of the teachers). (RQ1a7)

Also, when student 8 was asked, she said:

“Nagiging pantay ang tingin ng mga guro sa mga

mag-aaral” (The teachers view to their students are equally). (RQ1a8)
Disadvantages of being in Heterogeneous Section

For the research question 2, three essential themes were drawn out. The

participants were asked what are the disadvantage of being into heterogeneous

section.

Table 2. Disadvantages of being into Heterogeneous Section

ESSENTIAL THEMES THEMATIC STATEMENTS

Missing the old classmates and friends  New faces to interact

 Unfocused
 Lack of interest
 Difficult to adjust
Lack of Self-confidence  Losing of interest
 Hopeless to show their
knowledge
Lack of Attention  Lot of competitors
 Students who are more
knowledgeable may not be able
to learn more and better

Missing the old classmates and friends. This is the first theme generated

under the research question 2. When the participants were asked about this, they

revealed that being into heterogeneous section you will have new faces to

interact with, you will be unfocused, you don’t have interest and it is difficult to

adjust.

When student 5 was asked about this, she directly answered:

“Ang disadvantage nito ay parang mababaguhan ka

dahil baka may iba na namang bagong mukha ang
masasalamuha, mapapalayo ka sa dati mong mga kaibigan”
(The disadvantage of this is it will be new to you because
there may be some new faces to be interact and you
will be away to your old friends). (RQ2a5)

Also, when student number 1 was asked, he stated:

“Minsan hindi ka nakakafocus mag-aral kasi nasanay

ka na kasama sila” (Sometimes you can’t focus to study
because you are used to being with them). (RQ2a1)

With regard to this, student 4 directly stated:

“Minsan nawawalan ka ng gana dahil namimiss mo

yung dati mong kaklase” (Sometimes, you lose your
interest because you missed your old classmates). (RQ2a4)

In support of this, student 6 said:

“Dito mahihirapan kang mag-adjust at kadalasan

mahihiwalay sa mga nakasanayang kaklase at kaibigan”
(You will have difficulty in adjusting and usually you
can be separated to your classmates and friends). (RQ2a6)

Lack of Self-confidence. Another essential theme generated is lack of self-

confidence. When the participants were asked about this, they revealed that they

lose their interest to study because of losing their self-confidence.

With regard s to this, student 9 directly stated:

“Ang disadvantage nito ay nawawalan sila ng gana

dahilan narin ng pagkawalan ng tiwala sa sarili”
(The disadvantage of this is they lose their interest
because of losing their own confidence). (RQ2a9)
Also, when student 2 was asked, she said:

“Yung mga estudyanteng walang tiwala sa sarili

ay lalong nawawalan ng pag-asa na maipakita ang
kanyang mga kaalaman” (Those students with no
self-confidence are more hopeless to show their
knowledge). (RQ2a2)

Lack of Attention. The last theme generated from student’s responses is lack of

attention. In these theme, students said that you can’t get attention when you

have a lot of competitors and students who are more knowledgeable may not be

able to learn more and better.

When student 10 was asked about this, she directly stated:

“Siguro yung marami kang kakumpitensiya kaya

pansin” (Maybe when you have a lot of competitors so
it will be more difficult, then you will not get attention). (RQ2a10)

Also, student 7 answered:

“Maaaring hindi matutukan ang mga estudyanteng

magagaling dahil nadadala sila ng mga kaklase nila
na hindi seryoso pagdating sa studies nila” (Students who
are more knowledgeable may not be able to learn
better because they are affected to their classmates
who are not serious about their studies). (RQ2a7)
Effectiveness of Heterogeneous Sectioning

For the research question 3, three essential themes were generated. The

participants were asked on how do Heterogeneous section affect the academic

performance of the students.

Table 3. Effectiveness of Heterogeneous Sectioning

ESSENTIAL THEMES THEMATIC STATEMENTS

More learnings and knowledge for  It makes your grades high

every students  Sharing of ideas
 Students learning is more
increasing
Self-confidence  Improvement of the students
 Low ability students interaction
with high ability students

More learnings and knowledge. This is the first essential theme identified by

the researchers for the research question 3. Under this, it was found that being

into heterogeneous sectioning it makes your grades high, you can share your

ideas to others and student learnings is more increasing.

When student 10 was asked, she directly said:

“Mas nagiging matured ako makihalubilo sa iba

tapos mas nabibigyan niya ako ng mas marami pang learnings
which is nagiging rason para tumaas yung grades ko” (I’m getting
more matured to interact with other students, then it can
give me more learnings which is the reason to make my grades
high). (RQ3a10)
In support of this, student 2 stated:

“Nabibuild ang anilang self-confidence at nagkakaroon

ng sharing ng mga kaalaman” (It can build their
self-confidence and they can also share their knowledge).
(RQ3a2)

Also, student 3 said:

“Malaki ang pagkakaiba ng heterogeneous sa

homogeneous sectioning kung titignan natin ito sa
akedemikong perpormans ng mag-aaral. Base sa
aking obserbasyon mas tumataas ang antas ng
pagkatututo ng isang estudyante kung ito ay nasa
heterogeneous sectioning” (There is a great difference
between heterogeneous in homogeneous section when
it comes to academic performance of the students. Based on
my observation, the student learning is more
increasing in heterogeneous section). (RQ3a3)

Self-confidence. Another essential theme generated from students’ responses.

It was found out that there is improvement in students and low ability students

can free to interact to interact with high ability students.

According to student 6 when she was asked on how heterogeneous

section affect her academic performance, she directly said:

“Nakakaapekto ang Heterogeneous sectioning sa

academic performance dahil dito nabibigyan ka ng
pagkakataon na umangat kahit sa maliit na bagay”
(Heterogeneous sectioning affect the academic
performance of the students because it gives you
the opportunity to improve even it is small things). (RQ3a6)
In support to this, student 7 simply stated:

“Maaaring mahila ng matatalinung mag-aaral ang mga kaklase nila

na hindi masyado active interms of this academic performance”(It’s possible that
high ability student can help the low ability students who are more active to their
academic performance). (RQ3a7)
