Stabilizers for Polyamides
Background

 Polyamides (often filled with glass fibers and/or mineral

fillers) are increasingly used to replace metals for under-
the-hood components
 Thermal oxidative stabilization is critical to maintain
properties at the high temperatures found under-the-
hood
 Typical applications include air intake manifolds, rocker
covers, air filter housings, and radiator end-tanks

Types of Stabilizers
 Organic Antioxidants
 Inorganic Antioxidants
• Combination of copper iodide (CuI), (potassium iodide) KI or potassium
bromide (KBr) and lubricant
• Neat CuI is dusty and neat KI cakes into a brick
• Has light stabilization function
 Hybrid Inorganic/Organic Antioxidants
• Better color than pure inorganic antioxidants
• Also recommended for fiber
 Selection of the antioxidant system is dependent on the requirements
of the application

Page 20
Products
Stabilizers for Polyamides
Inorganic Antioxidants

Advantages Disadvantages
 Excellent thermal oxidative  Poor initial color
stability, especially at high
 Pigment interactions
temperatures (>120oC)
 Negative impact on electrical
 Low stabilization cost vs.
properties
organics
 Water-extractable
 Not effective for the
stabilization of polyolefin-
based impact modifiers

Virgin Plastics Versus Recycled Plastics

Virgin plastics Recycled plastics

• Pure polymer • Mix of polymers
• No impurities • Contain impurities
• Not processed • Damaged from previous heat
histories
• Stabilized for
ONE conversion • Consumed stabilization

Recycled plastics require stabilization systems designed

to address stabilization issues specific to recyclates

• Effects depend on addition level (and moisture of the resin)

• It is strongly recommended to start dosing at 0.3% and then gradually increase the dosage if
needed to avoid an excessive melt viscosity increase.
