PIPING LAYOUT ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION REV: D2

1.0 SCOPE

This Standard covers the requirements for piping design and piping layout.

Excluded are

a) All instrument control piping downstream of the first piping block valve.

b) All heating, ventilation air and water services within buildings.

Where local plant conditions or space limitations dictate that this Standard
cannot be applied, proposed deviations shall be submitted for
PTT/CONSULTANTS approval.

Piping furnished as a regular part of proprietary equipment shall be in accordance

with the requirements of this Standard.

2.0 GENERAL LAYOUT REQUIREMENTS

2.1 Piping Arrangement

Piping shall be arranged in an orderly manner and routed as directly as practical,

considering economy, accessibility for operation, maintenance, construction and
safety, in established banks or pipe ways.

- Piping on elevated racks shall run at different elevations designated for

north-south and east-west banks, and change elevation when changing
direction. Combined changes in direction and level in pipe ways shall
normally be made with 90o bends. Where necessary, a 90o bend and a
45o bend may be used.

- Relative elevations of pipe ways shall be set to provide sufficient

clearance between lines at intersections.

- Flat turns at changes in direction shall be avoided on elevated pipe racks,

except lines requiring a slope and/or no pockets (e.g. Flare, Blow Down
etc.).

- Dead ends and pockets in lines are to be avoided.

In pipe tracks and pipe racks hot lines shall be grouped together and expansion
loops shall be nested. The number of expansion loops should be kept to a
minimum, consistent with the stress requirements.
SPC-0804.02-50.05
PTT PUBLIC COMPANY LIMITED PAGE: 4 of 16
PIPING LAYOUT ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION REV: D2

Provision shall be made for the flushing of all lines after hydrostatic testing, and
shall normally be done by the use of a removable spool piece or on long lines
with a line size flange and blank at the end of the line.

- Overhead lines for acid, caustic or other corrosive services must not have
flanged joints located above access ways or platforms.

- Where pipe work is laid on overhead structures, (in) tracks or in

permanent trenches and requires dismantling for process reasons, the
arrangement and clearances should permit removal of any pipe, fitting, or
valve without the necessity to disturb adjacent pipe work.

- Except when required for frequent maintenance or commissioning and

testing, the use of flanges in piping shall be limited to connection at
flanged equipment.

Generally, lines shall be run horizontally; however, where lines need to be

drained completely, the piping shall be sloped and fitted with drainage points.

Lines to be sloped shall be indicated on the Piping and Instrument Diagram.

All safety valves inlet lines shall slope and free drain towards the process line
and all flared lines shall slope towards the knockout drums with the minimum
slope as required on PD-10-13240-3515-01.

Underground lines shall have means for testing, draining and flushing.

Branch connections from horizontal air mains shall be taken from the top of the
main.

Piping arrangements shall ensure that installed valves are readily accessible and
easy to operate.

Where valves are secured in position only by being clamped between pipe work
flanges, e.g. wafer valves, the effect of removing the adjoining pipe work shall
be taken into account.

Valves shall not be installed with their stems below the horizontal.

Access shall be provided for valves in ground level pipe tracks, the valves being
suitably grouped as far as practicable.

Valve with extended stems in cold services that may contain liquids shall have
their stems located in a vertically upwards position to ensure that cryogenic

PIPING LAYOUT ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION REV: D2

liquids will not come into contact with the stem packing area. Exceptions may
be made for vent/ drain and instrumentation block valves.

Valves in insulated lines shall be designed to allow unrestricted operation. It may

be necessary to install extended stems so that the hand wheel is located clear of
the insulation cladding.

Valves shall generally be at a preferable working height between 1,000 mm

and 1,350 mm to centerline of hand wheel.

2.2 Clearances

Piping systems shall be designed and equipment laid out to provide access by
mobile equipment.

Space shall be left around equipment and piping to facilitate maintenance (tube
bundle removal, cleaning, etc).

2.2.1 Clearance between Pipelines and between Pipe and Concrete and Steel
