21st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
HIGH WAYS TO REPENTANCE
In response to the question in our Gospel
text of today, “will there be only a few
saved?" Jesus says, “Try your best to enter
by the narrow door because l tell
you many will try to enter and will not
succeed." This is an indication that we
have to strive to work for our salvation in
fear and trembling; we need to cooperate
with God's offer of salvation by doing what
is expected of us as Christ's followers. The
second reading from the Letter to the
Hebrews tells us “Hold up your limp arms
and steady your trembling knees and
smooth out the path you tread."
Repentance is necessary for entrance into
heaven. Mere familiarity with Christ is not
enough. Saint John Chrysostom proposes
five ways to true repentance.
1) Acknowledgement of our sins: We have
to acknowledge that we have sinned; call
our sins by name and ask for pardon from
God. The Good Thief gained paradise by
acknowledging his sins and asking pardon
from the Lord.
2) Forgiveness from the heart: Calm down
your anger and forgive. Do yourself a
favour by forgiving. In forgiving we
become like God. And if the Lord were to
mark our guilt who would survive?
3) Sincere Prayer: Prayer sustains our
relationship with God without whom we
can do nothing. We need his grace and the
intercession of the saints and especially
that of the Blessed Mother. His power
working in us can do infinitely more than
we can dare to imagine for our
transformation.
4) Charity: Almsgiving saves from death
and covers a multitude of sins (Tobit 4:10).
It saves from greed.
5) Humility and Modesty: Virtue stands in
the middle. Nothing in excess is good.
Humility enables us to grow in faith.
Modesty in our words and actions does
same.
Dear Brethren, Repentance is necessary
for entrance into heaven. We need to be
constantly and daily converted to the Lord.
May the light of Christ penetrate the dark
areas of our lives and enable us to live and
walk constantly in the light of Christ. Amen

September at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION
FOR ADULTS (RCIA)
Saturdays, 4:00pm-5:45pm
plus Mass 6:00pm
A programme for adults who are interested
in receiving the Sacrament of Baptism,
First Communion or Confirmation in the
Catholic Church. It is also open for anyone
who would like to explore their faith more.
First session: 19th October 2019.
THE ST JOHN VIANNEY “CAMINO (DE
SANTIAGO) WALKING GROUP”
will be going for an afternoon stroll after the
11am Mass on Sunday 25th August, we will
meet in front of the church.
All are welcome!
FAREWELL TO FR MARCEL:
Next Sunday, 1st September,
We will have a farewell party in our Parish
Hall for Fr Marcel after our 11am Mass.
We invited people to bring a plate / dish of
food to share; these foods need to be in
place before Mass. Put your name on the list
to indicate what you are bringing.
PARISH OUTREACH
SANDWICH MAKING (PREPARATION):
Will resume in the parish hall on
Fri. 6th September after Mass.
Volunteers are urgently needed on
Saturday mornings at 7:30am to help with
preparing the sandwiches, soups, tea and
coffee. Also needed are volunteer drivers.
