MOORE AFTER her selection several months ago as Guest of Honor of the WITCHCRAFT & SOR- CERY CONVENTION, C. L. Moore was also honored at the 30th World Science Fic- tion Convention in Los An- geles last month by FIRST FANDOM, from whom she re- ceived the Hall of Fame Award for her "well deserved niche among the immortals of science fiction." She also was given a plaque for her very first story, "Shambleau" which in 1933 placed her a- mong the giants of the fan- tasy field." In her early years she created the legendary "Northwest Smith" and "Jirel of Joiry," two of the most popular of all fantasy characters. Although she became instantly famous with her initial story, C. L. Moore continued to mature into one of the most perceptive of science fiction writers. Before her marriage to Henry Kuttner in 1940 she wrote the series of fantasy stories which were later published as "Sham- bleau and Others" and "Northwest of Earth." After their marriage, the Kuttners found themselves col- laborating on almost everything they wrote and between 1940 and 1958, when Henry Kuttner died suddenly of a Page 4 heart attack, they produced at least 200 short stories, most of which have been reprinted as book collections, as well as around 10 fantasy and science fiction novels. They also published a number of novels in other fields. Separately, under the C. L. Moore byline, the novels "Judgment Night" and "Doomsday Morning" appeared in 1952 and 1957. After her husband's death C. L. continued the work in television which the two of them had just begun, and re- mained in that field for several years, producing scripts for such shows as "Maverick," "Sugarfoot," and "77 Sun- set Strip." She also taught creative writing and literature classes at the University of Southern California where she and her husband had, during his last years, earned their B.A. degrees and Phi Beta Kappa memberships. C. L. earned her Master's degree in 1964. Also in 1964 she married her second husband, Thomas Reggie, and they now reside in Los Angeles. In 1971 C. L. was presented with the "Invisible Little Man Award" by the Elves', Gnomes' and Little Men's Science Fiction, Chowder, and Marching Society. In recent years the skyrocketing interest in fantasy and science fiction has led to countless reprints of the Moore and Kuttner books all over the world, in almost every lan- guage on earth. The boom shows no signs of abating. For which C. L. Moore is very grateful indeed. Page 5 GUEST LIST FORREST J ACKERMAN edits "Famous Monsters of Film- land." One of the most important books on the subject of Survival was written by two people known to the world only as “Darby and Joan’’. It is a frank, intimate day by day account of their experience and was the forerunner of THE BETTY BOOK and THE UNOBSTRUCTED UNIVERSE, written by Stewart Ed- ward White. It brings to every reader the answers to the questions: “If a man die, shall he live again? What is Death? What has hap- pened to those who have died? Where can | look for Truth?” It presents a pattern for the lives of individuals and Mankind in its vital, inspiring philosophy. 320 Pages . 54" xBY5" . $3.95 THE LIFE EVERLASTING By MARIE CORELLI Marie Corelli's flaming pen gave the world new visions of hope and new understanding of the power of truth in the hearts of men.
