Course Description: This course will follow a project-based literacy
framework that instills behaviors of independence, creates a classroom of
highly engaged readers, writers, and learners. Through this model students
will explore strategies for reading, writing, and learning that will help
students access text across content areas. The Florida Sunshine State
Standards as well as the Common Core Standards will be used to guide
instruction.
Course Expectations: The purpose of this course is to provide instruction
that enables students to develop and strengthen reading skills that will be
useful across content areas and develop independent reading endurance.
Students will be expected to work collaboratively and independently and to
take ownership or their learning.
Planned Methods of Teaching: Teaching methods this year will include whole
group instruction, small group instruction, collaborative task and projects,
and independent task.

Test and Quizzes:
 Tests are always announced in advance. Quizzes may not always be
announced.
 You will be informed on the concepts you need to know for the test
in advance.
 If a test or quiz was assigned prior to an absence, you must take the
test on the day of your return. If you missed a test or quiz during
your absences, please make an appointment with the teacher
to make-up the assignment.
Projects:
 Some projects will be completed during class time and others will
be completed at home.
 Ample time will be given for projects. No late projects will be
accepted. (You may want to print/finish early in case there is an
extenuating problem)
 When home projects are assigned clear objectives, directions, and
due date, as well as grading rubric, will be given in advance for you
benefit.
 Projects will consist of written/researched components and a
creative expression component.
 When completing an in-class group project the grade will reflect the
group’s work on the project, as well as the individual’s work for
his/her contribution.

 If a student is absent it is the student’s responsibility to make up all

 Students have the same number of days to make up work, as the
number of days they were absent. There will be no make-up work
allowed for unexcused absences.
Class Work:
 These grades are based on effort, cooperation, and completeness.
 Neatness is essential. Any work that is not done neatly will be
returned.
Bell Work:
 This work can be a review, an introductory, or an inquiry activity.
 Bell Work must be completed immediately upon entering the
classroom.
