10SA23 STATISTICS AND QUALITY CONTROL

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Answer ALL questions from PART - A and Answer any FOUR questions from PART -
B. Question under PART - C is Compulsory.

PART - A Marks : 10 x 3 = 30

1. Are judgment sampling and probability sampling necessarily mutually exclusive?


Explain.
2. In what way may an estimate be less meaningful, because of a) High confidence
level? b) Narrow confidence level?
3. In a trial the null hypothesis is that an individual is innocent of a certain crime.
Would the legal system prefer to commit a Type I or a Type II error with this
hypothesis? Why?
4. Is the confidence level for an estimate based on the interval constructed from a
single sample? How significance level differs from confidence level?
5. How the Latin square method differs from RBD?
6. What actually makes quality control an issue of common management?
7. Why is it impractical to inspect an entire batch of input from a supplier?
8. What is ‘Rectifying Inspection’ in acceptance sampling? What is the purpose of it?
9. Construct a cause and effect diagram for a failed model vehicle from a firm.
10. Explain the ISO 9000 series of standards used in quality management in an industry.

11. a. Describe the various sampling techniques with an example. (6)
b. A consumer research organization routinely selects several car models each year
and evaluates their fuel efficiency. In this year’s study of two similar subcompact
models from two different automakers, the average gas mileage for 12 cars of brand A
was 27.2 miles per gallon, and the standard deviation was 3.8 mpg. The nine brand B
cars that were tested averaged 32.1 mpg, and the standard deviation was 4.3 mpg.
Construct a 99% confidence interval for the population means. (6.5)

12. a. A filling machine is expected to fill 5Kg of powder into bags. A sample of 10 bags
gave the weights 4.7, 4.9, 5.0, 5.1, 5.4, 5.2, 4.6, 5.1, 4.6 and 4.7. Test whether the
machine is working properly. (6.5)
b. A large hotel chain is trying to decide whether to convert more of its rooms to
nonsmoking rooms. In a random sample of 400 guests last year, 166 had requested
nonsmoking rooms. This year, 205 guests in a sample of 380 preferred the
nonsmoking rooms. Would you recommend that the hotel chain convert more rooms
to nonsmoking? Support your recommendations by testing the appropriate hypothesis
at a 0.01 level of significance. (6)
13. a. In the manufacture of precision pins in which the diameter of the pin is the quality
characteristic to be controlled, 10 samples of 5 pins each were collected after a lapse
of every 30 minute period. X and R for each sample was calculated and the results
were recorded as below.

i) Determine the control limits on X and R chart.


ii) Plot the averages and ranges on the X and R chart and state whether the
process is in control.

b. The cloth of the ABC manufacturer was inspected – 100 square metres is taken as a unit.
The following defects per unit were recorded:

14. a. Explain various types of sampling plans which are in practice in industry with their
respective acceptance criteria. (6)
b. In a double sampling plan N = 50, n 1 = 3, c1 = 0, n2 = 6, c2 = 1. Using the correct
combinational formulas, compute the probability that a lot exactly 2% defective will
be accepted by this plan. (6.5)
15. a. Mention any five supporting tools in TQM projects and explain with examples. (6)
b. Describe the goal and importance of six – sigma quality approach. (6.5)

PART - C Marks : 1 x 20 = 20
16. What is meant by “Experiment” in Design of experiment? Four different machines,
M1, M2, M3, and M4, are being considered for the assembling of a particular product. It
is decided that six different operators are to be used in a randomized block experiment
to compare the machines. The machines are assigned in a random order to each
operator. The operation of the machines requires physical dexterity, and it is

anticipated that there will be a difference among the operators in the speed with which
they operate the machines. The amounts of time (in seconds) were recorded for
assembling the product: Test the hypothesis, at the 0.05 level of significance, that the
machines perform at the same mean rate of speed.
