CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

The idea of oversleeping is inclined towards the

negative, simply because anything that is taken beyond the

extent of the required amount is unbeneficial. This problem

leads to more problems, more specifically tardiness. This

chapter will deliver a brief description to the topic stated prior.

Furthermore, the introduction introduces the topic and the ideas

related to it. The objectives will depict what the research aims to

accomplish, while the significance of the study deals with the

individuals that will benefit from the study. The scope and

delimitation represents the limits of the study. The conceptual

framework is a complete presentation of the variables to be

observed in the current study. Lastly the definition of terms

serves as a reference for unfamiliar terms mentioned in the

course of the study.

Introduction

Oversleeping is referred to as the act of

overcompensating the body’s natural periodic suspension of

consciousness and energy restoration. An individual clearly

needs sleep to function at an optimum level physically and

cognitively. However, the prolongation of sleep beyond the

required number of hours affects the body negatively.

Oversleeping may seem ideal, but it can be just as damaging to

a person’s

sleep cycle as not getting enough sleep. Similar to under

sleeping, oversleeping messes with the circadian rhythm, a 24-

hour cycle that is driven by our biological clocks and results in

physical, mental, and behavioral changes. By sleeping longer

than normal, we unknowingly throw off our regular circadian

rhythm. Thus, affecting not only the person’s health but also

their ability to be productive.

The negative effects regarding the phenomenon of

oversleeping are common particularly in the academe. Some

students are late to class on a regular basis mainly because of

their mislead sleeping habits. Thus, a clear indication of tardiness.

ETC’s (2009) reported that the attendance and punctuality policy

clearly states that “regular and punctual attendance is of

paramount importance in ensuring that all students have full

access to the curriculum. Valuable learning time is lost when

students are absent or late”. Therefore, tardiness greatly

2
degrades the learning experience and overall productivity of a

student.

First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities

(FAITH), an academic institution, advocates punctuality by

eradicating the habitual tardiness of the students through

disciplinary actions. Actions such as ID confiscation of students

whom are late to arrive and set of punishment procedures for

frequently late students. Thus, a concrete stand of the institution

against tardiness, and a determined act in favor of implementing

punctuality.

Oversleeping is directly associated with student

tardiness. The student’s constant application of ill-advised

sleeping behaviors will equate to consistent tardiness. Therefore,

creating circumstances inclined towards incompetence. According

to Gottfried (2014), with tardy students entering the school day at

abnormal times and potentially missing a large number of

cumulative instructional hours, the tardy student establishes bad

punctuality habits and the other students are adversely affected

and classroom instruction is slowed by this disruption.

Instigated by the problematic phenomenon, the

researchers aim to systematically design and create a more

effective alarm clock. This device has the ability to wake up a

3
person through the stimulation of the individual’s cognitive

capabilities. Once the alarm has been set at a specific time point

the device syncs its internal mechanisms to activate the

alarming mechanism at the programmed time. However, unlike

the traditional alarm that can easily be deactivated by pressing

the snooze or stop button, this device’s disabling system works

differently. The innovation of the project lies with its unique alarm

deactivation mechanism that is designed to challenge the

person’s cognitive abilities, because waking up the mind is

significantly a better cause that waking up the body. The mind

itself is the aspect of the individual that commands the body to

do specific tasks, such as waking up and getting out of bed.

Therefore, through waking up the mind, the probability of

oversleeping is greatly reduced, and an alarm that functions to

such extent is more effective that the traditional counterpart. All

in all, aids in preventing tardiness and work inefficiency.

Significance of the Study

 To the community

4
This research will help in minimizing the instances

of tardiness thus promoting the virtue of punctuality to the

citizens of the community.

 To the users

It greatly increases the chance of waking up on time

thus preventing oversleeping and tardiness.

 To the school

The outcomes of this study may also serve as

reference material.

 To the future researchers and future engineers

They may use this study if they are going to conduct

related studies and which to know something about the alarm

and other related products.

 To the researchers
The researches would benefit in the study through

acquiring knowledge and a better understanding of the principles

involved in this study. All of which can be applied to deal with real

world situations.

Objective of the Study

5
The general objective of the study is to develop a highly

effective alarm which requires the user to complete a game that is

systematically designed to wake up the mind. Hence helping the

students overcome their struggles against oversleeping.

This study aims to:

1. To create an alarm clock that is more effective than the

traditional counterpart, though focusing on waking up the

mind with a cognitive stimulation exercise.

2. To implement a device that will greatly reduce the instances

of oversleeping through a more effective approach to an

alarm deactivation system.

3. To design an alarming device that integrates the Arduino

system and Real Time Clock (RTC) module technology

Scope and Limitation

The study focused on the development of “Sleep

Snap: Cognitive Stimulation Alarm” which has the capacity and

capability to wake up a person through stimulating cognitive

function. The alarm will do this by using a mind game that needs

to be accomplished in order to disable the alarming system. Thus,

6
preventing the instances of oversleeping better than the

traditional alarm. Moreover, greatly reduces the probability of

tardiness through waking up the person on time.

Furthermore, First Asia Institute of Technology and

Humanities (FAITH) is where “Sleep Snap: Cognitive Stimulation

Alarm” will be implemented. It will require the perception of Grade

12 STEM Students who are experiencing difficulty to wake up

early during school days and workdays.
